Hi all, recently got a GTX 980 ti Zotac AMP! edition. Currently using a Dell U2412M, and thinking of u pgrading monitor either to a 144hz one or a 1440p one. In your experience, which gives the most improvement to gaming and use in general?

Heard good things about 144hz (fluidity), but then again i dont really play competitive FPS or anything (Witcher 3, HOTS, Borderlands series, Fallout when its out etc). Is the difference really noticeable?

Read benchmarks that say 980 Ti can tahan a 1440p monitor even for the most demanding games today at near max settings.

I dont really have the extra moolah to splurge on 1440p 144hz monitor, so gotta choose between the two.

At the moment leaning towards a 1440p, and given experience with Dell, the U2715 @ 739 from Sim Lim. Does anyone have good experiences with other similiar monitors that they can recommend? Happy to hear!!!

For the price of the U2715, how about getting the P2715Q? 4k resolution (3840x2160) monitor for abt $50 bucks more.

The other option is to go for Asus or Acer G-Sync 1440p monitor for 120Hz/144Hz gaming.

Thanks! Where did you see the 50 bucks off tho? I see on dell website for reference, the U2715 is 819 whereas the P2715Q is 939.

Not sure if 1 980 ti can tahan 4k also gaming ;X, no intention to SLI in the future.

Which models would the Asus/Acer ones be? From my understanding gsync isnt actually the refresh rate of the monitor? And is instead some technology that "mimics" a higher refresh rate? Dont really understand the explanation on NV website hahas :s12:

Wait for IT Shows ba. I got mine at $779 from IT Show back in March. :)

As I only got the P2715Q, I can only speak for the P2715Q. The Asus/Acer G-Sync ones need to ask pple here who actually own these monitors. From wad I know, G-Sync syncs the refresh rate of the monitor to the fps of the GPU so that gameplay will be smoother. So if the GPU can only pump out 30fps, the monitor will set to 30Hz refresh rate. Likewise if ur 980ti is gonna pump out 100fps on 1440p, the G-Sync monitor will refresh at 100Hz (100 screen refreshes a second), which will eliminate screen tearing compared to pumping out 100fps on a 60Hz monitor.

Cool, thanks I'll read up more on Gsync. I see witcher 3 FPS @ 4k only ~40 avg though... Wow 779 is really a good price!

sorry hijack this thread, don't want to start a new

144Hz Refresh Rate means my gpu needs to generate 144fps for the monitor to "fully work"?

Yes, in my humble opinion 144hz is only a useful feature if playing low-graphics-intensity competitive FPS like Counterstrike where fluidity matters alot. The improvement on other games wont be felt since you will still be capped by your FPS and GPU power. Unless you are running SLI/crossfire top end GPUs...

THe only other thing that makes sense is a 144hz WITH freesync / gsync, so that the 144hz is still put to use even if your GPU cant churn out more than 144fps. But a 144hz + freesync/gsync monitor is 1) rare 2) expensive and will 3) make you sacrifice an IPS panel.

If im not wrong, there currently is NO 27 inch, 1440p, IPS, Gsync/Freesync monitor.

The closest is the Asus ROG Swift (Gsync), and Benq XL2730z (Freesync), but if im not wrong both are TN panels only. and the former is > 1k bucks.

End up i went with 27inch, 1440p, IPS, 60hz (U2715H), and very satisfied with it. For witcher 3, can set to ultra (hairworks off), and tune down minor settings and acheive constant 60fps. That is good enough for me.

Why does high refresh rate only make sense with G sync/freesync?

It is rare and expensive because they are still relatively newly inplemented technology and not really widespread. Some panels with freesync/gsync use IPS as well.

IPS monitor with sync at 1440p 27 inch is available what? Not in the other thread meh :s22: the ASUS monitor.

There are a few (but not many) 27 inch, 1440, IPS panels with GSync/Freesync. The notable ones are Acer XB270HU (Gsync) and Asus MG279Q (Freesync). Also Asus PG279Q (Gsync) is announced but not yet released.

Also, I read that adaptive sync technology works best at a low-medium frame rate of 30-40 fps. The argument is that screen tearing becomes less noticeable at high frame rates (upwards of 90 or 100) on 144hz panels. Not sure if that is true though.

Yeah sorry, that one just came out and i havent been following availability. I bought mine 2-3 weeks ago, at that time even the Acer wasnt out yet i think. The Acer one is also not available in SGP. Before these two, believe it was only the Benq and the Asus SWIFT (is this the MG or PG one, sorry cant rmb).

Ultimately i also cant really say whether itll be worth since i dont own one, just that the price jump is indeed steep (200-300) over a regular non 144hz and i couldnt justify it given how good the picture quality is on the U2715 already.

I just came to the same decision for a monitor.

Had the 144hz G-Sync IPS panel Acer Predator XB270HU been available in Singapore I would of probably bought one. Why they chose to bring in the TN 1080P version I have no idea..

I didn't feel comfortable with shipping one in from Amazon or Newegg given the amount of complaints about quality control and dead pixels (which also seem to equally effect the TN panel ROG Swift).

So I went with the 1440P DELL U2715H time being and will wait and see how things go with the technology...

Save up for a bit longer until you no longer have to choose, then hoot the Asus MG279Q.

Good monitors give you years of enjoyment, so it's one of the things it makes sense to splurge on the best.
