Hi everyone,

I am looking to buy a new laptop solely for school work.
I will not be editing or rendering videos so I am wondering if i5 processor is good enough. No need for i7 right? Will just be using Microsoft Office and to watch movies.

Looking at the following specs under the budget of SGD $1300.
CPU i5 or i7 ?? Not too sure about the differences
GPU does not really matter since I will not be gaming on my laptop
RAM at least 8GB
15inch display

Can anyone suggest a list of good laptops around that specs?
Im thinking of the Lenovo Flex 2!

Please help!

If you only need to use MS office and watch movies, just any 15 inch laptop on the market will work since neither task are performance demanding. For your RAM requirements and price, they usually label it in the specs sheet by the display units.

$1000 can get you a decent computer for your needs. Tried looking at an ultrabook? As for the processor, the difference between i5 or i7 will not be much since you won't be doing anything heavy duty on it. An i5 dual core processor should suffice for you.

EDIT: You can consider this laptop: http://www.acer.com.sg/ac/en/SG/content/model/NX.MLTSG.001 Well within your budget, and as for the RAM, you can easily get someone to upgrade it for about $50.

Most i5 and i7 are dual core models now.
(i5-42xx or i7-45xx, 46xx are dual cores).

Between dual core models, the difference is not so much, thus i5 will do.

If you want really more significant improvement on CPU, then go for i7-47xx series.

Next few factors to consider is the weight, battery life and screen resolution and touch screen.
If you are carrying around daily, then weight is important consideration.
If where you are using the laptop do not have power socket readily available, then, battery life is important.
If you are watch movies and using it for entertainment, then screen resolution (FHD) is a good to have.
With regards to touchscreen, it depends on your usage patterns and preference. Touchscreen allows more in depth interaction with your computer, but it increase the reflection of the screen and is a fingerprint magnet.

For Flex-15 2 it is
i7 dual core/8GB/GT840/15.6" touch screen FHD model @ 2.3kg.

Other models to consider

MSI CX61,
i7 QUAD core/4GB/GT840/15.6" non touch FHD @ 2.5kg
Price: $1199

Acer Aspire VN7-571G
i7 dual core/8GB/GTX850/15.6" FHD touch @ 2.4kg
Price: $1498

Acer Aspire e5-571
i5 dual core/4GB/Intel graphics/15.6" HD non touch @ 2.6kg
Price: $769

HP Pavilion 15-p259TX
i7-5500U 5th gen dual core/15.6" non touch @ 2.4kg
Price: $1299

For such needs I always recommend that you skip the school offers and purchase business grade notebooks because of their build quality; business notebooks are typically more robust and capable of taking more hard knocks than consumer notebooks. They also almost exclusively use onboard Intel GPUs, so battery drain is kept as minimal as possible.

Can't go wrong with the Thinkpads, the Dell Lattitudes / Vostros and, if you can even find them, the Panasonic Toughbooks.

Can also try the ASUSPRO line of business notebooks from ASUS, or the Travelmates from Acer if you want a business / semi-business-consumer notebook.
