I have a budget of $1000 and would like suggestions for laptop - ultra book/non-ultra book, with touch screen/non-touch screen. Mostly used for surfing internet, typing documents, spreadsheets, powerPoint slides, photoshop, watching DVD movies, listening to music. Not a gamer. Tks in advance.

You can go through some brands from the website such as Asus, Dell, Toshiba etc. Depends on which brand you prefer. Alternatetively, you can actually see what promotions PC Dreams currently has. šŸ˜‰

Tks for the suggestion. What specs should I look for if I want a laptop with good screen resolution? I guess the laptop must have a good graphic card as well. A noob abt laptop specs, so need to ask.

If you are not planning to play game with your laptop, then you don't have to consider graphic card which can help save cost. Secondly, what do you mean by good screen resolution? Are you looking for full Hd 1080 or just Hd 720, this consideration will affect the price a lot as full Hd laptop tend to be a more expensive model. If you dun mind a non matt screen, you can consider getting a lenovo flex 2 14, i5, full HD 14 inch touch screen with graphic card 840m. The price for this managed to hit 899 for the comex fair ! But retail price seem to be 1099

Tks for the suggestions. Was contemplating of getting those 2 in 1 notebook which can be used as a tablet as well. In the end, I decided to increase my budget and bought asus ux32ln at $1280 which is less than the original price. Decided to get an ultra book so that it is easy to carry. Already have another (but heavier) notebook at home.

Not a bad choice, though personally I would recommend the Surface Pro 3 instead.

Yeah, the surface pro 3 is nice. It is light and the screen resolution is good but I did not want to buy a computer with only one USB port.

USB port can be easily expanded with a hub. My biggest issue is it's top-heavyness when used in a laptop config, I have little confidence in using it casually on my lap

I managed to get asus ux32ln from courts online when it had $108 off if purchase items valued at least $999. However, there wasn't any free gift. Asus ux32la is a cheaper model as it does not have FHD. You can check the websites for the difference.

Hoped your ASUS do not break down like mine.

My K551LN broke down three times in three months and now still not repairable.

GOOG LUCK!

Tks. My older Asus notebook, a S46C series, which I bought more than a year ago, is still working fine. Hopefully, this new asus ultrabook is alright.

Thought of getting an external optical drive for my new notebook. Would like recommendations for a good DVD/blu ray writer and player that is compatible with Mac/non-Mac notebooks. Tks in advance.

The damn power from ASUS just wrote to confirm that they are giving me a refund for the notebook I bought in May.

After breaking down three times in three months and claiming a different problem each time, they have given up on their own device too.

I was preparing my documents to take action under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act (CPFTA) for this defective good on ASUS when they wrote.

Just one silly move from them and it's CASE and Small Claims Tribunal here I come.

They don't seem to get it.....it's not just the faulty device they sell, it's the inconvenience, the stress, the anxiety, and a matter of principle to get what a consumer deserves.
