I suspect that new harddisk are made to fail on purpose.
Initially I didn't believe it but after coming across so many harddisks, I had and worked with I found that the old harddisks lasted 8-10 years (I forget exactly how many years but they are SATA Gen 1) and still running, while the new ones failed after 1-2 years.
Seriously I can't help but feel that they are made to fail to boost sales.
Anyone feels the same way? :s22:

I have to agree, many of them fail, I did not use to check for bad sectors and merely reformat, and they work and then they fail. I'm stuck with 2 HDD out of warranty and 2 within warranty with ALL BAD SECTORS. OMFG right

I guess poor longevity of modern drives are also a result of cost cut measures and lack of competition. Drives in the past were pricey and they do last much longer typically.

Actually it is particular to hard drives? All consumer electronics have significantly shorter lifespan than before. Computers, TVs all lasted more than 10 years and now you can't buy one that will do more than 5 without breaking down at some point..

I'm sure it is intentional but it is not unique to hard drives. Pure consumerism at play, there is no incentive for manufacturers to bother to tighten tolerances and increase the average lifespan of even hard drives
