Hi all... I just bought an iPhone 5s yesterday. Because the phone backup didn't work (thanks to change in main iCloud email - long story), I restored the phone via DFU and set up as new device.

However, I was startled by the speed at which my battery drops. I didn't charge it for 8 hours as suggested by M1 (I assume Li-ion doesn't require that) and just charged to full. Used it for a while until 95% which is normal, then when I woke up next morning, the battery is at just 72%.

I was stunned. My other ex-iPhones had never encountered such a massive dip overnight (I killed all apps!). I charged it for 20 min until it went up to 97% then went out... Just 4 hours of use with LTE largely on the battery drops to just 5%. My iPhone 5 has about 35% after 4 hours on LTE, so I was again surprised.

Background app refresh is totally off, location off, Bluetooth off, brightness at auto, email set to fetch, iOS 7.0.4.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with the phone? Just bought it yesterday. The phone is charging as I type. Thanks.

EDIT: overnight I turned off all internet connections.

Continue to use the phone. I think you might need a few more recharging to optimize the battery ions within it.

Only be alarmed if after a week of usage your battery still continue to display the same behaviour.

Yup, will do. It's only my previous iOS devices have never encountered such a tremendous drop (especially overnight).

I'm only a bit worried that if this problem persists, I'll have to exchange the device for a refurbished model so soon after purchase. That's why I posted early... but I'll keep monitoring. Thanks!

Welcome! It's hard to say why but it's best we rule out exchanging iPhone so early on! :s13:

I've the same settings as u highlighted in bold and also may want to turn the 'reduce motion' setting to 'on' too and in spite of those, doesn't drop so drastically as yours.

Yes, perhaps u really need to go through several charge/discharge cycles for the batt to reach optimum performance.

I also just got my 5s yesterday and charged it full and left it idle for 7 hours ... Didn't turn off background app refresh ...
Phone was restored via iCloud.

The battery went from 100 to 95% after 7 hours. Wifi is on and location is on.
It's on iOS 7.04 by the way. I am surprised that yours dropped so much. You probably want to use it for a week and see if it improves. All the best

Normal home use is just fine. Now no longer charging... 1h 15 min later now at 87% on wifi.

LTE use and idle are just ridiculous so far... Tonight shall check on the idle again.

After about 2 nights:

The night after the post was all good. Battery still at 100%.
However, yesterday, battery drain was back but not as severe. From 95 to 78%. I've checked... All apps closed. But when I restarted the device it took me forever to power off.
