New MacBook Air for development

Hi guys. Has anyone who’s doing programming gotten the new MBA? Care to comment if it’s powerful enough? I’m in my final year in Uni, softwares used are basically IDEs and Unity. Thanks!

Typical IDE should be no issue as mostly are text anyway. Unity depends on how complex your project is. But in general it is doable.

Xcode works fine on a Macbook Air 2012.. It just takes longer to launch the phone simulator and quite a bit of time when doing build.

same... I've use my MBA in 2013 for xcode.. it works fine back then the only complain I had was it was very hot that you can cook egg on it lol... but I think that issue was that model itself seems to be fixed the following gen afterwards

performance wise it cant be compare to MBP... running multiple apps might be an issue... better get the non-tb model of MBP if you really want it

wow that's great to hear. I actually bought a MBP 2018 just a few days back. Trying it out for a week. The Touch Bar and price have put pressure on me to return it and get the (slightly) cheaper Air.

I am still trying to convince myself to return this and get the air, but the thought of the lower power processor is making it really difficult for me cos I am a sucker for smooth and seamless experience (I typically spend the entire day in front of a laptop)

just curious are u guys still using the machines that u mentioned?

If you are a sucker for speed and smoothness then it's better to go with the pro. If not you can return the Touch Bar model and get the 13" pro without Touch Bar.

If you need the speed, stick with the pro. I am no longer using it because the Air died on me after 5 years. I am considering the Air too, mainly because I am using the iMac for most of my work. The Air serves as a portable device which sometimes I will use to do development.

For Macbook, no penalty when you return it right? I am thinking of getting one to evaluate too.

Just to add. If you are constantly doing intensive work, the Air's battery life will take a hit badly as the fan will be constantly on so that the processor can turbo charge to keep up.

ya i'm using MBP 2018 TB model... but not focus on dev work more on eGPU (gaming) + travel machine and light on XCODE (only tried once updating mobile apps I've developed on my older MBP late 2016)

That is unfortunately how they want to structure their product lines.

The pro line seldom have any pro features in it anyway.
