New PC build (recommendations pls!)

Hi I am enquiring on behalf of my brother-in-law who is studying architecture.
He requires a new PC which can run:
Rhino
Enscape
Unreal Engine
Zbrush
Sketchup

Can I get a PC parts recommendation for this? budget would be 2-2.5k.
He is looking for an ATX build.
Any processor recommendation? Is it still better to avoid 13,14 gen Intel processor?

Well, there's a few things to keep in mind because the scale of the project can change overtime, so you want to have upgradability in mind when building your system.

Since you perform a wide range of tasks, and likely at different scales, its more important to determine what you really need and identify your bottlenecks and upgrade accordingly in future.

For a start, you would would to have at least a modern 8 core CPU on AM5 platform as it supports until 2027.

GPU with at least 12GB VRAM, I would recommend going with Nvidia for best application support and compatibility.

RAM with at least DDR5 32GB 6000MHz dual channel so 2x16GB sticks, and if you want to run 64GB then go for 2x32GB.

For motherboard, I recommend those with at least 3 NVME slots that are not lane shared for future expandability. Choose a decent B650/B850 board as for a system that's running high load frequently reliability is important, also you would want something that has at least heatsinks on the nvme slots and vrms, avoid bottom barrel boards.

The PSU ideally should be between 850 to 1200 watts, get an ATX 3.1 PSU.

Lastly, you going to need good cooling and airflow for your system so i would recommend a case such as the Lian Li 216, which is an extremely versatile and good all around case.

This requirement is certainly below your budget, but the thing is that getting high end part will burst the budget immediately or sacrifice the quality of another part.

if ur pc requires alot graphics rendering, get a 12core or 16core cpu will shorten the waiting time.

unreal and zbrush favour more cores, while the other cad programs generally rely on strong single core performance. intel traditionally does well in balancing these and cost, though as u are aware there is the stability issue that plagued raptor lake. whether or not it should be avoided depends on how much u trust intels word that their mitigations in place are sufficient. that said, something like a 14700f should do very well in these programs and can be found bundled with a decent mobo (rmb to update the bios to latest) for around $700, while outperforming more expensive amd alternatives (r9 7900/9900x) which generally cost around 1k. if still worried, u can either go 12900k (should not be afflicted with degradation, but is a little slower and probably harder to source) or 265k (costs around $100-200 more).

most people wont need to go over 750w, non xx90 tier cards will be just fine with that power capacity or less, which should be the case for ts with a medium sized budget. but it would not hurt if the price difference is minimal between the 750w and 850w models.

It’s obvious that a $2000 rig for the stated use case is just the starting point as TS needs will evolve and require upgrades down the line. If you didn’t consider TS’s profile and future prospects, that’s a major oversight.

Upgrading to a TOTL GPU and CPU, adding more storage and upgrading to an AIO is actually not uncommon for productivity needs.

even so, the upper limit of 1200w as u suggested is just plain overkill and only would be beneficial for extreme overclocking, not necessarily relevant to users who prefer stability to ensure their jobs actually complete without the pc crashing. given the premium these higher wattage (≥1000w) units usually command, i dont think it is an efficient use of the budget now.

Also, it seems that you are actually trolling because you're aware of the miniscule price difference between 750W and 850W, yet suggesting TS to go 750W to cause harm.

Lol, i am not wasting my time on a person pretending they are making a valid point but with the intention of low key trolling.

Not everyone is obsessed over saving every last penny especially when it leads to poor decisions that cost more in the long run.

If you’re broke, then sure, that might be how you think but that’s your issue, not anyone else’s. Stop forcing your own limitations onto others because you’re not doing anyone any favors by doing so.

See if you can fit in a Intel 265K with a 12GB 4070 Super and most importantly, 32GB/48GB memory. PSU wise, just get a decent 1000W psu. If can't get, a 850W is good enough.
