So I'm building a new rig soon and have everything pretty much confirmed but I was just going through the list of components and having second thoughts.

Before everything else, here's the plan:

Mobo CPU: B85-G41 PC Mate + i5-4690k
RAM: Corsair Vengeance CL9 8GB (4GB x 2)
GPU: SAPPHIRE R9 280 3GB DUAL-X (bought)
SSD: Plextor M6S 128GB
HDD: WD 1TB Blue
PSU: THERMALTAKE SMART SE 630W
Case: Corsair Spec 03
OS: WINDOWS 7 HOME PREM

The real hesitation is the CPU itself. Giving it another thought, I was debating whether to go a step further and get the i7-4790 instead because of Hyperthreading.

The reason why I would be reconsidering is because of my uses:
- Gaming (Ye typical list of high-end games like AC, BF4)
- Video editing (Sony Vegas Pro, Premiere Pro)
- Lots of multitasking (Lower-end games in windowed mode while surfing the web/ doing work, skyping, running gaming VPNs like Evolve and Hamachi, console simulators etc etc)

and figured I would benefit from having Hyperthreading technology. I thought I'd ask for more experienced opinions here and see what you guys think, would the i5 suffice, or would there be a very noticeable improvement using the i7? Also if there are any incompatibility with the parts or better suggestions in the same price range.

I do not plan on overclocking anything.

Thanks in advance for the input.

if i am not wrong, getting i7 would be slightly better as you are doing video editting. and since you are not gonna oeverclock, just getting a i7 without k behind.

Among all, only your video rendering and video editing may need that i7. The rest dont reaaally utilize HT.

I see. I understand some other tasks also make use of HT like 3D modeling, Photoshop, Microsoft Office programs, audio production. But those are merely some of my hobbies and not real main uses.

So pretty much I will only really benefit from i7 since I do a lot of video production. Would the upgrade still be a recommendation?

Yup. For video production, you can go for i7 if it is within your budget. 4790k will not disappoint you even if you do not overclock. If you don't intend to overclock, you can go for a h97 board and save a bit of money. The rendering time can be cut by tens of minutes when you render your output file with premiere pro and encoder cc, especially you when you are working with 720p, 1080p, 2 k and 4k long production.

*Coming from an i5-4590 experience.
*A hardcore multi-tasker may need more ram.
*If you do not really want to overclock, then you get a non-k cheap with the fastest base clock/ a chip that is within your budget.
*If you want to try out overclocking, you can get the i5 k chip (it is cheaper also) and ramp up its frequency and see how it affects your rendering time (oc vs stock).
