New to DIY NAS

Hi guys,

Would like to check if anyone can recommend me the hardware for DIY NAS? Would prefer that it is capable to do raid.
Would be good to have those small casing and able to put 4 HDD.

Kingston 2gb 1333mhz ram x 2 = $44
FSP 300W Powersupply (don't come in retail box. check if its the one warrantied by Tech-Dynamic) = $49
Remainder $150 buy case. Choose your own. Else if you want to save up and don't mind bulky cases for your NAS, I recommend
NZXT Source 210 (lots of space for HDD. have fans to cool HDD as well) = $69
Total = $312

i went with the following for my DIY NAS:

Asus C60M1-I -> USD $80 (Amazon)
Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 x2 -> USD $48 (Amazon; price depends on luck)

Case: Lian Li PC-Q18b (was willing to splurge on a nice case from SLS)
PSU: Silverstone 500W (small form factor to fit the lian li)
Sandisk cruzer 4Gb thumbdrive S$5

I got the mobo and 2 sticks of ram from amazon. FYI one of the ram was bought used on amazon at 15USD. Yes there is always risk by buying from amazon esp warranty issues but for me I took a chance.

My raid 1 was created using nas4free.. Good to spend some time reading up first before deciding if you wanna go for it. For me it was a little project that I wanted to do instead of just buying it off the shelf.

cool. so the OS u r using is nas4free? Did u try before freeNAS?
I have been reading up alot on DIY NAS. But can't really find helpful stuff regarding hardware spec.

no point buying casing if you must ship it over. the shipping costs is going to cost you a bomb.

hardware its quite simple. since you're buying all your parts brand new,

look for lowest power consumption cpu (processing power matching your own need.)
look for a compatible size motherboard (depending on your case)
within that size, look for number of SATA ports and their features (raid supported etc), OR, look for number of PCIe slot if you're going to use a raid card or something.
find a psu that has good efficiency for the average power you are doing to draw.

I am going for a project in FreeNAS too.
Just got a intel 775 itx board.
Just top with 6420 proc 4Gb ram and a good LianLi Q16 case with 300W psu and it is good to go.
If you are going for FreeNAS the advice is not to have hardware raid but use the ZFS from FreeNAS.

Just to ask, you install what OS for this setup? Freenas?

For my own setup Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. If I gotten those parts, Ubuntu too.

I've tried freenas, win server, the best and easy to config is synology. Good for beginners. Using it for 3 weeks liao great features.
