Any recommendation for affordable hotels near time square?
Or is airbnb a better choice?

Step 1: don't stay near Times Square; it's crowded and noisy and you'll wish you hadn't. The only reason to stay near Times Square is to be close to the Broadway theatres, if that's why you're there.

You're better off moving a little further away, further down Manhattan. I'm pretty Starwood-focused, so I'm going to recommend Starwood properties, but off the top of my head, the Four Points Chelsea is great; if you really want to stay near Times Square, check out the Westin Times Square, which is a block away from the chaos.

A friend stayed at Hilton Times Square last week. Think it's in the $200 range.

I wont stay at/near Times Square myself too.

The hotel rates are crazy for September. All 350$ and above, Hilton time square and four point hotels are like 500$ a night.

Is staying near Hell's Kitchen that area considered good? As in location ,accessibility etc

Just stay near walking distance to a metro. It's $2.70 flat rate one way by metro. Or get the metro pass.

Times Square will not be the only place you are visiting. The streets are organised in grid and travel by the subway is easy- stay near a subway station away from Times Square

stay near metro station! Times square is so crowded with tourists!

If you are there for min 5 days, can go for the 7-Day Unlimited pass for US$32. I counted, if take more than 13 rides, it pays for the card liao. Else buy the metro card and top up (with some extra discount) rather than buy single trip.

I stayed at Holiday Inn NYC - Lower East Side during my April trip this year during the Easter holiday period where hotel prices seems more expensive. USD $190 including tax per night. Clean and just steps from metro station.

Stayed at The Pod Hotel previously.

Not crazily expensive IMO.

Pod 39 and Pod 51 difference is the one is on the 39 street. the other one is on the 51 street.

Near to subway station yet away from the crowd in buzzing time square.

The only downside: Room is extremely small.

But then again all houses in New York are never big in the first place. Even with airbnb.

meh.

Another option is Hotel Newton at UWS. Just in front of 96th Street subway which is abt 10+ mins ride to Times Square.
