Nikon or Canon Camera?

Hi all, currently i have canon ixus compact camera. I am looking to purchase a new camera to take better pictures. I can see the difference between a compact and dslr camera when i develop the photo and see it on the computer screen.

Pls advise me what camera is good for a beginner like me? Budget best is less than $1k. My intention is to bring the camera overseas for travel photography.

Can try going for mirrorless camera too! Sony NEX(3N) series, Olympus PEN etc

Any DSLR in your budget range will do the trick for you. Look beyond Canon and Nikon too. If you enjoy shooting using the rear LCD screen then Sony is good, they have fast AF in LiveView mode which others do not.
