Ntu EEE

First off, engineering in general is probably the toughest course among other courses. I am one of the student from ntu eee. I can admit that eee is not an easy course and I think it really depends on individual. Some of them can perform well while some of them cant. And i can say i am one of them. But what really matters is... are you choosing the right course? Have you thought of becoming an engineering? Well engineering job can be quite boring after long term. Can you imagine working as an engineer? Or are you studying a non interest tough course for the SAKE of getting the DEGREE CERT?

I have friends who can get GPA 3 plus and even 4. They are really hard working. But I also have friends who dont study and get the samd gpa as the others, but well not everyone can get good grades. Ntu EEE is a large cohort. There are still ppl who get lousy grades and..... after first sem when you gt back ur result, when u see it, you will feel demoralise...
YOU WONT LIKE IT and you will feel MISERABLE.. I have friends from JC came into eee and they get WARNING LETTER from getting less than GPA 2. What the purpose of studying courses that you have no interest in. Coming to school is like fighting a war for years. Not only that, engineering course have alot of SMART FOREIGNERS.
I hope nobody will feel upset or regret after choosing the wrong course.

Lol, I disagree that engineering is one of the toughest courses in NTU. All the courses in NTU have a fair share of students who did well and did badly. I have engineering friends who got almost perfect GPA as well as those who struggled to even get a 2.0.

However, I totally agree with you that interest is very important in choosing your university course. One of the reasons that many engineering students who did badly is that engineering is the only course they can enter in NTU. And for the sake of a degree, they choose to do engineering.

Yes, it does boil down to interest. If one is really interested in engineering, he will score well. Same goes to the other courses.

However, engineering has the highest proportion of foreign scholars. Up to 36%. While courses like biz and humanities have much less. The overall average is 16% foreign students in local universities. If engineering contains 36% foreign students, you can see the clear imbalance. Humanities and biz are saved from the competition against these guys who distort the bell curve.

On top of that, in NTU, engineering students have to take up more modules AND more cores. HSS students not only have LESS modules overall but they also have 30AUs of electives while engine students have only 15. Allowing HSS students to boost their GPA with more easy electives. Also, taking into consideration the fact that engineering lab hours are now not even counted into AUs. We used to get 1 measly AU for 3 hour practicals per week. Now we get 0. We put in more hours, but its not even reflected.

Lol, I am not from HSS but I can tell you that HSS mods are easy to pass but difficult to score. I took a mod from HSS last semester and my group worked really hard on assignments and presentations. Overall, I can say that my results for that mod is first or second in the class. However, I only got an A- in the end. Our instructor for that mod also told us that getting B+ is already pretty difficult. HSS profs wont give really high scores for excellent presentations or assignments since these are subjective. This is unlike the science and engineering mods we took which we will get our A+/A if we answer most qns correctly during the exams. HSS students also need to spend extra time on practising presentations and writing assignments or doing group projects.

And regarding foreign scholars, I think most Singaporeans think too highly of them. Maybe you all do not have that many foreigner friends like I do. I had many foreign scholar friends since I was in JC. What I can say is that yes, most of them are really hardworking, but they are not in anyway smarter than us. Some of them are also disadvantaged by their poor command of English. If you work hard, you can definitely perform better than them.

Lol, all comments are from my personal experience. No offence... :)

No offence taken man. I guess everyone has their own opinions. I myself can easily get As for all the HSS electives I take. Without even studying much. The ratio of the amount of time I spend on each engin mod as compared to a HSS mod is probably about 5:1. But so far I've gotten 3As, one A- and one B+ for the HSS mods I've taken. So to me, they are very easy to score.

Yes agree, engineering is probably one of the more tedious degree course.
One of my friends from NTU mechanical engineering repeated a few modules, and eventually changed to Nanyang business school and graduated with 2nd upper.
I remember being told that electrical engineering is even harder than mechanical engineering, but that is just an opinion :s13:

With the cut off points dropping to 3.44(http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/oad2/website_files/IGP/NTU_IGP.pdf), many average poly student with diplomas related to electrical engineering can study for a degree in EEE easily.

In my opinion, this is good news if you are from a full EEE diploma because you may have studied more electrical modules than those who are not from a full EEE diploma(like aerospace electronics, biomedical, engineering business, engineering with nursing, engineering with culinary, engineering with toilet cleaning etc).

I remember laughing at my JC friends who are struggling with digital electronics, they don't have enough time to learn the basics of binary, flip flops, etc while i am quite familiar thanks to poly. I also laugh at them when learning circuit analysis, they duno much about wad power factor correction, 3 phase single phase conversion

But it was my JC friend's turn to laugh at me in modules like physics and maths , their knowledge of H2 maths and physics and graphics calculator sure win average poly students who are only armed with engineering maths and O level pure science.

But JC AAA students come electrical engineering get warning letter also nothing surprising la lenaque...

The ones who have the last laugh will be China students. Year 2 and year 3 modules are nothing to them. My china friends tell me in china they only got 2 maths, Mathematics and Olympic Mathematics. Physics all close one eye can do.

Yes if want study for degree must study something easy. I regret not studying hard in O level, now bo bian have to study in NTU EEE with many smart people. But also lucky for NTU EEE i get to study for a degree.

Even though EEE is a good degree with many opportunity, it is not easy, poly standard of engineering can be covered with few hours of lecture. Given a chance, i will never take electrical engineering for the sake of degree. Not worth the effort. Even those with passion also lose passion.

With GPA ranging from 3.44 to 3.93, there are bound to be very smart students and not so smart students. Also smart students smart until pretend to teach u but in the end confuse people.

So for survival, we pay attention in mass lecture, and found out that not easy for the professor to teach in a style which everyone will understand. So we depend on tutorial, only to find out some tutors are graduate students who are not familiar with the subject, or they are very familiar, but can't write legibly. But there are those who are good as well, attend their tutorial class no need go lecture.

So in the end we depend on ourselves, only to find out that the only thing we can depend on is hoping that i am the smarter few in the cohort so the bell curve will be nice to me

Can any seniors from EEE shed shome light on what modules require presentations?

Technical Communications in your first sem

Professional Communications, Engineers & Society in your last sem.

Probably that's the presentation part for NTU EEE core modules.

Hi all, heard from a vendor (ME, NUS) that nowadays 1st year subjects will not be counted in the GPA, is that true for both NUS and NTU?

Coming from a pre-GPA era, I think it is a better system in terms of transparency.
