My experience on MSE :)

Hello! Firstly congrats on getting into MSE ,especially if MSE was what you desired:) I just completed my first year in MSE, so let me just share my take! Before that just take a look at this so as its very useful for you in terms of what modules to expect, its a flow of how your 4 years would be.

I felt like semester 1 the modules were like a recap/foundation phase. I would not say that it's very demanding I would say its reasonable. Let me share my experience , maybe someday you would relate to? So for me I felt semester 1 is really the sem you can score, which I did not really make use of. Some tips to do so 1) Attempt your tutorials assignment diligently and to best effort before you attend tutorials . Don't just go tutorial w/o attempting the questions just for the sake of going it won't benefit you at all! 2) Attend lectures!!!( I can't emphasise how it actually makes a difference if you attend lectures dutifully) Many students including me have skipped lectures, which I do regret. Almost all the lectures are recorded , so you have the comfort of watching it when you are at home , but the question is will you have the determination to watch it ASAP or will you procrastinate to watch it! When you do the later you will realise you are actually behind time and there's an accumulation of videos to watch. This was one of the consequences I had to face. For sem 2 I felt like now the modules were just one step higher! More in-depth e.g. (physics 1012 in sem 1 it was a recap on physics so all those newton law, the field, ..very introduction like) but for sem 2 (material physics this is clearly divided into two parts magnetic, and electric filed) So its really focused on these 2 topics which are very similar in some sense as well. I felt sem 2 now the workload is slightly more , time management is extremely crucial!

To end this off I just want to say everyone including me is going to share with you their own experiences of MSE or maybe the NTU life in general just don't get intimidated and lose hope! I am sure there will be people who will say MSE is a tough course and tell you its not easy to score! BUT trust me thats not the case! Nothing is impossible not just in MSE but everywhere else! So hopefully you guys will keep this in mind! Pay less attention to what bell curve does, or people s opinion on it as long as you do your tutorials diligently, dutifully, attend lectures or keep up with the lectures , clear you doubts with profs and attempt past year papers for the exams you will definitely be rewarded with good grades! So @ at the end of the day its all about how much you are willingly to put in effort and so! The bell curve is not your biggest competitor
its yourself! Well maybe that just my take:)

Don't worry about the prof ,I am sure if they know you need help and are very sincere/hardworking they are more willingly to help! My personal favourite is Prof Ho( he teaches only in sem 1 PH1012/Physics A( for those who didnt take physics in JC) . He's literally a superstar prof, he's extremely helpful, he never gives up on you nor does he judge you based on your grade! I think he's NTU's biggest teaching asset! Another prof would be prof Liam she teaches the 1st part of material physics , very friendly and has a very warm personality!:)

P.S( I have a whole brand new set of physics A notes so if either one of you need it I can give it to you!. I also have some PYP (with complete answers) to give away too. I have to check if I have my sem1 online notes maybe that could help you if you want to revise before sem starts. I would encourage maybe atleast once a week or so just revise certain topics for physic or chemistry .

'The Organic Chemistry Tutor" from youtube is an great online resource . His videos has helped me so much when I didn't understand certain concepts from lectures!I highly recommend him. For physics its this another life saviour called" Step-by -step science". So maybe you guys can refer to them in the future.

So remember its all about your own effort, you own diligence, determination that makes anything impossible! and time-management . I also think its really great if you have a time table like on this day you revise this module etc! Really would benefit you!

If you need any other help or you want to clarify any questions can ask me! I am more than happy to help!
Lastly I just want to say consistency is the key , but I am sure we have days we all just give up and you know plans dont go well! So don't be too hard on yourself! Its okay!Just keep going, and don't look back:)
Like I said nothing is impossible so if you are aiming for perfect 5.0 gpa go for it! Don't listen to people when they say must be super smart, very hard, chances so slim....At the same time if you don't get the grade don't give up, the grade doesn't reflect everything! and remember when we make mistakes , we try to correct them and try not to repeat them BUT they dont define us!

Along the way it would be good if you can encourage your peers or anyone to aspire as well

Cheers,P

Link details

Hi for some reasons I have to remove the link for the programme detail. But just google NTU MSE Curriculum. Click under the Y1 admission-- then the admission 2016 and after! You will see it all there

Seeking for advises!

Hello,

I had been accepted into NTU MSE earlier this year, and I will be officially starting in AY 2020/2021 (after NS).

Some questions that I have:
1) Is H2 Physics and H2 Chemistry highly relevant to this course? I am from Ngee Ann Poly Marine & Offshore Technology, so my exposure to Chemistry stops at O-Level Pure Chem. My exposure to Physics is higher than O-Level but still not up to H2 yet. Will it help if I start reading up on H2 Chemistry and H2 Physics now to get a rough idea? Are there any particular parts that are exceptionally important that is 'die die must know' and the parts that will be left untouched in NTU MSE?

2) Are the courses generally more theoretical or mathematical (or a good blend of both) in NTU MSE?

Seeking for advises. Thanks in advance!

Hello junior HAHA I graduated from MOT last year. Maybe you can search for the lecture notes for PH1012 online to get a clearer idea. there’s also a ebook for the module which is quite useful that you’ll have to purchase (I think it was around $5) I have lots of poly friends currently in NTU, able to get at least a B with no H1/H2 physics knowledge.

Seems like modules like Engineering Mechanics, Electrical Tech and Thermodynamics back in NP kind of bridge us up to a higher level so the transition for Physics should not be too big I guess.

I have a bigger concern with Chemistry actually, since MOT exposes us to zero chemistry (maybe except for the very basic electrochemistry in Marine Production Tech). Do you find the learning curve for Chemistry very steep?
Are poly students from most engineering courses at a disadvantage for the Chemistry modules, since the exposure to Chemistry is minimal?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there. So basically 1st year in MSE we took two modules of chemistry. Basically there were just inorganic and organic chemistry. I am from poly too I did not feel that the learning were steep or very much demanding maybe because I took them before in a very foundation way back in poly. But trust me its not that demanding or challenging. If you want I can actually share with you the topics covered in each of the modules , or even the notes or so for you to see the demands of it:)

Hello! Thanks for your reply!

I am interested to find out more about the Chemistry modules in NTU MSE. I am now reading up on H2 Chemistry.

Based on my understanding on the courses on the two modules, am I correct in thinking that the first Chemistry module is on these topics: Acids & Bases; Atomic Structure & Periodic Table; Reaction Kinetics; Chemical Equilibria; Acid-Base Equilibria; Solubility Equilibria.
I took these topics by matching the H2 Chemistry Syllabus and the Course Summary from NTU MSE Website, but I hope you can advise me on the depth of the coverage.

It would also be good if you can similarly provide advise for the second module on Organic Chemistry as well.

Thank you! :)

Hi ,

For sem 2 its on organic chemistry. So before the recess week topics related to organic family compound were covered(e.g alkane, alkene, aromatic compound e.g) How to name them, what are their reactions,(e.g reactions alkenes go through.) After the recess week I felt it shifted more towards biochemistry (Lipids, protein, DNA) not very much chemistry. I actually enjoyed this as I really enjoy biology and was missing it as MSE does not really have any bio related modules in Y1 , unless you choose your elective to be related to biology. I am sure coping would be your concern, but trust me its not difficult. Revise regularly , clear your doubts do your tutorials and practise the PYP. You will do well. I mentioned a few youtube videos that were really helpful , you can check them out!
I have the sem 2 modules's notes, and the solutions. I am more than happy to help so maybe you provide your email and I can send it to you?

is Dr Ho. not prof Ho. He's a devil when setting papers so be very prepared. If you really follow his lecture, do tutorials or read up on his extra notes. Can comfortably get min a B.
