NTU MSE

Hi, i know its abit late but can anyone provide me with some info on NTU MSE?
erm, the course intake numbers. are the profs/TAs approchable/friendly, how is the curriculum?
Also,i have neither taken pure chem for o's nor chem for A's, will it be a serious issue if i go ahead for this course?

Hi! If i'm not wrong, each yr mse takes in around 230-250 students. Most of the profs are v nice and approachable, most of them are patient and willing to help the students when you approach them

As for the curriculum, in yr 1 you will be studying foundations modules like Math, Physics, Chemistry, Life Sci (sth like Bio), Material Sci, Computing, Effective Communication (need to do simple presentation) and Lab work. Then in yr 2, you will study more advanced math, physics, chem, some material related modules and lab work. In yr 3, you will be studying only material related modules (no more math, physics, chem and lab work). In yr 4, you will choose specialization modules and FYP.

Regarding your issue on chemistry background, I felt that it is not a very big problem. Throughout the 4 yrs you will need chemistry knowledge for 2 modules only (out of 41 modules). However, you need to put in much more effort if you wanna do well for that 2 chemistry modules.

NTU MSE or SIT power engineering

hi ppl, I am currently at the crossroad to choosing one of the course, materials science engineering(MSE) frm NTU or electrical power engineering frm SIT, i have the same passion for both sides, but i really dunno which is better after doing some research and have been thinking for quite long alr, some of the advice i got were if i go to MSE after 3 years and get the right specialisation, i have the chance to enter the petrolchemical industry, some of them said that most ppl ended up doing insurance, sales or the banking side. for power engineering, the chances are i would end up working at singapore powers or some other power generation company but my cert would also not be very recognise due to the competition with reputable university. Therefore, i really dunno wat is good for me.

If you're interested in power engineering, why not choose Ntu eee? It also has power specialisation and is more reputable than SIT. If you can get into MSE in sure you can get into EEE as well.

I kinda fked up my application for NTU, I placed EEE as 2nd choice for both application cuz I was hoping that environmental engineering would accept me but I only managed to get MSE offer on the 2nd attempt and i didn't appeal for EEE because i thought that environmental engineering would be easier to get in as well only till late february when I realised that EEE is easier and ended up missing my final chance to apply EEE this year. So now since i can't appeal based the offer i got, i can only make a choice between this 2 course le

Well, most engineering courses have common modules in the first semester. So if you still wanna do EEE in NTU you can apply to transfer after the first semester. And since the modules are the same, you can bring them over once you transfer to EEE and won't lose any time.

Between MSE and power, you should think about which interests you more. MSE is one of the more interesting courses out there. Creating a new material can have applications in defence and healthcare. The NTU provost is a pretty big name in materials engineering. He invented a bunch of stuff for healthcare based on materials engineering and he is rich because of those inventions.

Power on the other hand, is stable. No matter where you go, power will always be relevant. But not much innovation. You won't discover anything new or find something groundbreaking. You won't be rich. MSE has a lot of potential to go big. Defence, healthcare and daily applications. But if you don't make it big, you might get stuck.
