NUS Business/Mech Engineering

Hey guys, i'm gonna be entering university this year after my National Service. Currently, i already reserved a slot in Mech Engineering in NUS. But after deep reflection, during my outfields lol. I think i only chose engineering because it was the 'safer' choice my background is SP Bioengineering with a cGPA of 3.77 so when i looked at the modules in Mech Engineering, it felt more familiar and safer to do it as compared to engineering. Looking at the business modules in NUS, gave me a fright you know we all have fear of the unknown.

Currently, applications are going to open tomorrow and the IGP for business has dropped and i'm leaning more towards business. I can't see myself working in a Engineering field as compared to let's say banking or business field. It might be because i've done internships in engineering places so it was kind of a turn off for me. But after contemplating a long time, i felt that i should just take a risk and apply for business, i'm just afraid i won't be able to cope business modules being new to the course.

I think i can do well for engineering but its not my passion. Should i go for engineering and then deviate after i graduate more towards business or should i just take business?

With an Engineering Degree, you can work both engineering or business related jobs.

With a Business Degree, you can work business related jobs and not engineering related jobs.

Since you are unsure about your career, why not chose Engineering Degree in order to have more choices for your career?

Take some leave where possible and ask your seniors in both programmes to speak with their profs on letting you audit the classes (sit in). You'll learn so much about the culture and whether you're likely to fit in later on.

In general, an engineering program is more rigorous than a business program. So you will probably survive if you choose to do business.



So the question is what will you regret more? With a good engineering degree, you can enter business jobs easily. But not the other way round. And have you consider an engineering degree with a minor in Business or double majors? And also you can do a graduate level business degree e.g. a master in business for "fresh" graduates or MBA when you have some experiences.



As for your previous internships in boring places, I think it really depends on your luck! I had a wonderful internship at uni then... I was an engineering student but I chose a non engineering internship... this is something you can consider too!


You have plenty of options but the key is to choose the option that differentiate you from the rest. Think along where is your competitive advantage.... hope this helps...
