NUS FASS or NTU English?

I have browsed forums and consulted seniors regarding the pursuit of English Literature in university. I'm currently still deciding between NUS and NTU for that, and would appreciate any advice I can get. :)

Truthfully, when the brand name/prestige is stripped away, I would be more inclined towards NTU. The professors and students have really left an impression on me. However, I heard that NUS is better for arts courses compared to NTU, especially with FASS being more established than HSS. Are the professors and rigor in NUS really better?

from what I see so far, NTU and NUS has no major differences in job application success rates in the same field of study

where did all this being more "established" comments come about

if all those comments came from people who did not graduate yet, or worst still, your peeps then you should probably take it with a pinch of salt

It mainly comes from relatives and my peers haha. I have consulted my senior in NUS about it, and she merely told me NUS is better because of the brand name and such. I probed further for better reasons, but she couldn't answer my question.

I guess I was just concerned that, if even among ourselves as students, brand name is such a significant factor for consideration, would the same apply for companies? Would companies favor NUS graduates more than NTU graduates, even just a little?

Pursuing an English Lit degree in Singapore isn't entirely feasible and practical, and I'm honestly worried for my career prospects. I'd really hope to maximize the paths I can take after graduation.

see what you want to do in the future, if you want to join the civil service, honestly there is no difference.

if you want probably step into multi national pr agency, like ogilvy & mather, they hire from all 3 schools

Choose the one where you are more comfortable with. The difference between the two is marginal. What will matter more are your grades instead of the NTU or NUS debate. If you feel more comfortable with NTU and its environment, then you will likely do better there.

Chose the one closer to home and is more accessible for you.
I would not put too much emphasis on the professors, since you can always do an exchange locally between the 3 local university for at least 1 semester.
And the other semesters and vacation, you can apply to go on overseas exchange or short immersion programmes to learn from overseas experts and academics.

Definitely FASS. With the exception of Communications course, most people are in HSS because they couldn't get into FASS or because they were offered a scholarship.

Still doesn't make FASS better than HSS. A course's quality is not determined by its undergraduates.

Second this. Only good thing about ntu is probably the easier bell curve

gradeless first year tho. In any case, best way to see which course is better is to compare the modules and the profs. That is, if education is important to you.

There's actually not much difference for the two; they are both far for me haha. I intend to apply for hall in both universities. Though whether I can sustain my spot in hall for the next four years (or even this year in the case of NUS) is doubtful. :s22:

Thank you for your suggestion, I will keep that in mind!

Easier bell curve? Meaning it's generally less difficult to obtain a better honors degree?

Does that mean that it's more likely for employers to give a job vacancy to an NUS graduate compared to an NTU graduate, in the case where both applicants have similar qualifications?

I dont think employers will view the grads from the 2 schools differently if the have similar grades. Easier bell curve as in NTU GENERALLY has a weaker pool of students for the same courses in terms of academics as seen from the IGP of the 2 schools every year. Nonetheless the S/U policy advantage for NUS probably even out the competition in the first year though.

Hall wise, it is definitely easier to get a placing in NTU because they guarantee a slot of every freshmen. Whereas for NUS it would be based on your past cca record or even popularity and contacts etc

Regarding the honors thing, personally i would prefer to go for FASS. Reason being is that for eg if i fail to hit the prerequisite grade to do honors i would be able to graduate in 3 years albeit without honors. However, if the same thing happens to you in NTU, you would have to go through the entire 4 years of schooling in order to grad even if you do not qualify for honors. All in all, i believe that if you do not qualify for honors year it is better to grad and start working earlier
