NVIDIA SHIELD Experience 9.2 adds loads of new enhancements

Featured image for NVIDIA SHIELD Experience 9.2 adds loads of new enhancements

NVIDIA has just pushed the SHIELD Experience Upgrade version 9.2 to its NVIDIA SHIELD TV devices, and it brings in tons of new enhancements and features, as well as plenty of bug fixes. It’s been a long time since NVIDIA pushed an Experience Upgrade to the SHIELD TV, and that’s partially why this update is such a big deal. SHIELD Experience 9.1 was released all the way back in November of 2022. So it’s been a few years.

This latest update also adds what appears to be more enhancements and bug fixes than any other upgrade. The NVIDIA SHIELD is an older Android TV box but it’s still the best according to many users. It also looks quite nice. If you haven’t seen the notification for the update yet, you can still check to see if SHIELD Experience Upgrade 9.2 is available. If it is, you can download it right away and get the benefits from it.

To check for updates, simply open up the Settings and click on Device Preferences, then click on Check for Upgrade. You can also configure a Quick Settings toggle that lets you check for upgrades from the main settings menu. It saves you a couple of steps. It’s also worth noting that you might see a message on the homescreen that 9.2 is available.

NVIDIA SHIELD Experience Upgrade 9.2 adds full support for Auro-3D high-resolution audio

The first and perhaps the biggest enhancement of this update is the Auro 3D support. More specifically, the full support for high-resolution immersive sound in Auro-3D over HDMI. There is one caveat to this. If you want the Auro-3D benefits, you need to connect your NVIDIA SHIELD TV device to an Auro-3D compatible decoder. There are lots of options here, but none of them are really cheap. So if you don’t already have one, consider whether or not it’s worth buying one just for this.

In addition to the full Auro-3D support, NVIDIA SHIELD Experience Upgrade 9.2 also adds several other enhancements. There is now support for Match audio content resolution if you’re using a USB DAC. Additionally, NVIDIA says there’s now a beta feature to match the frame rate. There’s a security enhancement for 4K DRM playback as well, and French parental controls.

As for bug fixes, there are 23 total fixes listed. Not the least of which are fixes related to crashes. Some users had been reporting problems with crashing when attempting to change the volume. NVIDIA says this is now fixed. There was a similar issue where GeForce NOW was crashing when users tried to launch the app. This should also now be fixed. Speaking of GeForce NOW, support has now been added for several new games on NVIDIA SHIELD TV devices.

Even more bug fixes

In addition to the few bugs mentioned above, there are actually a lot more that appear to have been addressed. If you’ve experienced choppy video playback after trying to fast forward or rewind something, that’s been fixed. Another big issue users were having was with the remote. After waking your SHIELD TV from sleep, the remote would stop working for about a minute for some users. While the remote wasn’t broken, it was still an inconvenience that lessened the user experience.

The good news is that this update fixes that problem. Additional bug fixes include the SHIELD waking from the lockscreen without a button press, the not permitted error when trying to do a large file transfer to a NAS drive, the Google sign-in flow getting stuck in a loop, and a stutter issue that was happening on Bose and Sony headsets when connected to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. These are just a handful more of the bug fixes. You can check the full list in NVIDIA’s patch notes.

The update adds support for more GeForce NOW games

If you use your NVIDIA SHIELD TV device to play games, you have more options now. The update to 9.2 adds support for Fortnite, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Black Myth: Wukong, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. NVIDIA says these are featured GeForce NOW games, so it’s unclear if there’s more that have been added. It’s also worth noting that most of these games were already available in GeForce NOW via PC, and have been for quite some time.

Summary

  • Nvidia Shield TV continues to receive updates, with hotfix version 33.2.0.322 resolving issues from the previous update.
  • Users can manually sign up for the hotfix through Google Form, with fixes for content stuttering and audio issues in Plex.
  • Fixes will eventually be included in a stable update, but no rollout timeline has been announced yet, showcasing Nvidia's commitment to the Shield TV.

While most streaming devices tend to receive fewer software updates as they age, the Nvidia Shield continues to stand out as a rare exception. The original version of the popular Android TV device launched nearly a decade ago, and it's still getting updates. Now, Nvidia has rolled out yet another update for the Shield TV lineup.

Earlier this year, Nvidia rolled out the Shield Experience 9.2 update for the Shield TV and Shield TV Pro, introducing features like Match Frame Rate and improved DRM security for 4K playback. Now, the company has released a follow-up hotfix update (version 33.2.0.322), as spotted by 9to5Google. This hotfix is aimed at resolving issues introduced in the previous update and improving overall system stability.

The update will roll out to all Shield TV users in the future

What's interesting is that this hotfix isn't being pushed to all users just yet. Nvidia is inviting Shield TV users to manually sign up through a Google Form to receive the hotfix. The company notes that users won't be able to roll back after installing the update. Since the hotfix build isn't Google-certified, users may not be able to install or update apps like Disney+ via the Play Store or stream DRM-protected content such as HDHomeRun channels.

According to Nvidia, the update fixes issues like video stuttering during Dolby Vision playback and problems with Plex when using AAC 5.1 audio. Here's the full list of fixes included:

  • Fixes night mode being skipped when DAP is ON.
  • Fixes Dolby Vision content stutters when frame match feature is enabled.
  • Fixes Match Content Audio Resolution for USB DAC
  • Adds back HQS / Maxrate option for USB audio.
  • USB TV Tuner fix with Live Channel app.
  • Fixes playback issues in Plex when using AAC 5.1 audio.
These fixes will eventually be rolled out to all users in the stable build, though Nvidia hasn't shared a specific release date yet. Still, it's impressive that Nvidia continues to support the Shield TV with new features and bug fixes, especially when most streaming device makers stop updates just months after launch. We'll update once the hotfix begins rolling out more broadly.

Check the price tracker website Camelcamelcamel . I think that price should drop by USD 20 sometime around July during the Amazon sale.

Think I will just wait for the stable build. Nvidia shield is one of the longest lasting media player for me. Before that, i used popcornhour and a whole bunch of other players. Each were good for their time, but nothing like the shield which receives upgrades and patches.

i love the "new" triangular remote tho....so much better than the old one..jeez..2019...6 yrs liao..when they gonna release a new NVDA Shield?
Yes the triangular one is much better.
I don't mind getting a better shield but then if you realise, what the shield supports is already state of the art: h265/hevc, hdr10, Dolby Vision, Dolby atmos, dts-x

What else does it need, hdr10+ and hlg?my tv doesn't even support that.

true..i went from original Shield Pro to the 2019 Shield Pro..the AI upscale is bagus for my UST projector..much needed boost for HD content to 4K.

Amazing tech for such an old chipset. This is probably a piece of electronics that I have kept for so long other than my laptop..lol

Nvidia hasn’t refreshed the Shield TV in over five years, but the company keeps software support going, with a new update now widely available with various bug fixes and newly added support for gaming at 120fps via GeForce Now.

The latest major Shield TV update arrived in February of this year as Shield Experience 9.2. Nvidia has since been working on fixes and other improvements for that update, and now another widely available update is rolling out.

Detailed on Nvidia’s forums, Shield Experience 9.2.1 started rolling out to “all” Shield TV devices as of May 6. The new update includes a handful of bug fixes including one that caused Dolby Vision content to “stutter,” as well as introducing one new feature. Within Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service, Shield TV owners can now select to play games at 120fps but at 1080p. 4K streaming support was added back in 2021.

The changelog for Nvidia Shield Experience 9.2.1 is as follows:

Upgraded Apps
  • Support to stream games on NVIDIA GeForce NOW at 120FPS up to 1080p resolution. GeForce NOW Ultimate membership required.
Resolved Bugs
  • Fixes night mode being skipped when DAP is ON.
  • Fixes Dolby Vision content stutters when frame match feature is enabled.
  • Fixes match content audio resolution while using an USB DAC.
  • Adds back HQS / Maxrate option for USB audio.
  • USB TV Tuner fix with Live Channel app.
  • Fixes playback issues in PLEX when using AAC 5.1 audio.
  • Fixes connection issues with third-party remotes after sleep or reboot.

Shield TV owners have confirmed that the update is hitting their devices.

This comes during the 10th year of Shield TV software support for the original models, but as mentioned, new hardware hasn’t been released since 2019’s Shield TV and Shield TV Pro. It’s unclear if the company has any plans for a new release.

Bought a 3rd party shield tv remote for about 10 sgd shipped from AliExpress.

Very satisfied. Pairs via "Shield accessories" -> "Pair an accessory"

( press "back" and "stop" buttons simultaneously to pair )

Night backlight brighter, find remote alarm louder than the triangular shield remote.

The NVIDIA SHIELD TV, a device that is so old I’ve lost track of exactly how old it is, is getting another update today. Version 9.2.2 is rolling out to all SHIELD and SHIELD Pro units and you should be able to grab it now.

First released in 1999 (I’m kidding), the SHIELD TV continues to get support from NVIDIA and still stands as one of the (maybe the) best Android TV devices on the planet. It’s still powerful enough to run everything you could need to run, supports so much of the media we consume in these modern times, and well, continues to see support.

This new update to 9.2.2 “addresses many quality of life issues reported in the field, improving stability and compatibility with other devices in your home entertainment center.” There are 6 bullets in the changelog from NVIDIA, all of which we’ve included below.

Enhancements:

SHIELD TV is now more accessible to people with disabilities with design improvements and compatibility with assistive technologies:

  • A pairing alert sound to assist users when pairing the SHIELD Remote and Controller in both OOBE and Settings
  • Added Bounce Keys feature
  • Accessibility Key Repeat feature implementation
  • Added settings UI for accessibility timeout
  • Support TalkBack TTS in 23 European languages
Resolved Bugs:
  • Audio dropout with Disney+
This at least the 3rd update for the SHIELD TV this year alone. I’d say your investment in NVIDIA’s streaming device has been a good one.
