History
Pre-debut
The original five T-ara members were trained for three years, and released their first song "A Good Person" for the Korean drama Cinderella Man soundtrack. In early 2009, Jiyeon was in a collaboration with SeeYa and Davichi for a song called “Women's Generation”.
In June 2009, Core Contents Media announced that Ji-ae and Ji-won left due to differences in music style. Boram, Soyeon, and Qri were added. The group's agency began to release promotional pictures in July 2009 in accordance with the new members. Afterward, T-ara released their debut single "Geojitmal" (Korean: "거짓말" lit. "Lie").
2009: Debut
T-ara made its debut on MBC's variety show on 29th July, 2009. The music video was released on 28th July, 2009. Their first performance was on Mnet’s M! Countdown show, where they performed "Geojitmal" and "Wanna Play". Their debut was looked upon negatively by netizens, who noted that it was lipsynched and commented that it seemed like an elementary school performance. The group announced afterward that future performances would be live. A few members of T-ara (Eunjung, Soyeon, Hyomin and Park Ji-Yeon) were in a project group with Supernova, a six member male group for the digital single, TTL (Time to Love). On 1st December, 2009, T-ara released their first full-length album, named Absolute First Album. This album had two singles, "Cheoeum Cheoreom" and "Bo Peep Bo Peep", both with music videos.
2010: Gaining popularity with their album
On January 1, 2010, T-ara won their first ever award on the New Year’s Day episode of Music Bank for their hit song "Bo Peep Bo Peep". Two days later, they won the Mutizen award on Inkigayo. T-ara also performed at a traditional New Year’s festival version of the song. The following week, T-ara won their second consecutive Music Bank and Mutizen awards. The next week, T-Ara won their third consecutive mutizen award, thus winning the triple crown. Later in the month, Core Contents Media announced that Eunjung and Hyomin would take part, alongside label mates, in project group, "Women’s Generation". Consequently, the group announced promotions for their follow up single, "Cheoeum Cheoreom" (Korean: “처음처럼” lit. “Like the First Time”).
In February, the group announce the release of a repackaged version of their debut album, entitled Breaking Heart. The music video for its lead single, "Neo Ttaemune Michyeo" (Korean: "너 때문에 미쳐" lit. "Crazy Because of You"), was released on 24th February, 2010. The group commenced Comeback performances with Mnet’s M!Countdown.
On the 16th of July it was announced that there would be an addition to the group, a new member Ryu Hwa Young. She would be the 7th member and it was also stated that Boram would replace Eunjung for the position of leader.
A representative of Core Contents Media told Star News over a phone call, "Once a year, the leaders will rotate, last year we already rotated with Jiae/Eunjung. It’s been a year and it’s time for it to happen again."
"At the time of T-ara’s debut, Eunjung was a good choice for a leader as she was a trainee for the longest time among the original members," he said, "But now we’ve decided that rotating leaders would be a good idea as it gives all the members an opportunity to grow as members of the group." The representative also said, "The choice to replace the leaders was a choice decided by T-ara themselves. They feel that this way T-ara is able to grow more as a group into a new direction."
2012: New Members, Scandal & Controversy
During the mid of 2012, two new members were revealed to be added into the 7 member roster bringing the count up to 9. Areum and Dani will both join T-ara during June and December 2012 respectively. Dani is an American-Korean who was talent spotted.
Amidst the addition of the new members, in July 2012, a rift between Hwayoung and the group suddenly appears. On the 30th July 2012, CCM announced that Hwayoung will leave the group effective immediately bringing the group number down back to 8 (without Dani since it is still July). Official reasons are unclear but anti-fans surfaced and criticisms hit the group hard. Product endorsements by T-ara were removed and their appearance at "K-pop Yeosu Expo Super Concert" has been cancelled. This will be a rough period for T-ara.
