Okinawa DIY?

Anyone has done it? Is it easy to get to the various places of interests using public transport? Can one just base at one city and travel to these places?

I know silkair flies there direct. Any other airlines you recommend?

yup, here is my trip report:

there are buses to most of the attractions. however, buses are not frequently, and the travelling time is long. so driving will be much better.

some of the attractions are very far from Naha city. for example, the aquarium is in Nago and is more than 2hrs from Naha. so u may want to base in Nago as well.

Thanks for posting your trip report. Most significantly, after reading post #103 there, I am reconsidering Okinawa. This is because at first after looking through the pics, I was going to ask you if the sceneries there are underwhelming compared to those at Wakayama. Indeed it is so as you mentioned in post 103.

You and I have much in common. I love natural sceneries than cities. I had been to kii-katsuura and love the coastal sceneries there. Was also thinking like you that Okinawa being an island the costal views must be 'wow'. Ok, reading your review and photos, maybe not.

Plus I don't drive, so getting around Okinawa might be tough if buses are infrequent.

Enjoyed reading your trip report. Ya, read about the Kumano Kodo trail when I was there and thought it very interesting.

You took great pics too.

I guess preference is quite subjective, and highly dependant on lots of other factors. maybe I would have enjoyed Okinawa more if the trip is solely on Okinawa and not with Kumano, or if I have visited Okinawa before Kumano. there are others who enjoyed Okinawa, so maybe u can get more feedback first.


maybe u can consider visiting some of the other islands in Okinawa as well?

Not totally ruling okinawa as a destination but It does seem driving would be necessary with for either okinawa or ishigaki though.
