Anyone here using OpenWRT 18.06.1 on their router?

Kindly share your router brand and model, and experiences.

I'm running Openwrt 18.06.1 on my Mi Router 3G. Loving it.

Will never return to stock firmware again on any router.

Was using it way way back on my WRT54G. A lot better than the stock Linksys ones.

.

I was using Tomato FW with my two WRT54G router and Starhub Cable online last time (quite some years, switched to Singtel Fibre in Feb 2012).

But with my Linksys WRT1900AC which I have been using since 2014, I am happy with the stock FW even though it supports OpenWRT since Stock is good enough.

For those newer models their wireless performance may not be as good as stock.
Agree. It's a case by case basis. However I see that Openwrt has improved a lot over the years. More models supported and less buggy firmware.

It even supports both software and hardware flow offloading on my Mi Router 3G which means full 1 Gbps speeds are possible (on wired ethernet). Except that in my area it only hits about 800+ Mbps. Which is comparable to stock firmware.

Also, I dislike backdoors.

In future I will only buy routers based on their compatibility with Openwrt, and ease of flashing. Good thing is that the configuration files are the same across different router models as long as you're using the same version of Openwrt.

I especially like repurposing my old routers which no longer have stock firmware upgrades by installing Openwrt on them.

I experimented with openWRT on my tp link archer c7 and found out that hardware offload does not work and my internet speed is limited to 200Mbps.

I agree that free open source software is better but unfortunately alot of routers are gimped without the proprietary drivers.

In the end I repourposed a old core2duo desktop and run pfsense. For WiFi I got a unifi ap AC lite as it's the cheapest ap with DFS channels support

I found the exact same issue with my Archer C7. Apparently there is a solution. You need the fastpath patch.

Which I hope will be incorporated into 19.01.

I'm a bit concerned about the power consumption with repurposed old desktops. Any thoughts?

Good to know thanks

U can get one of those watt meter to measure if u want. I live in a rented appartment with free electricity so power consumption isn't a factor lol.

I guess compared to air-con and water heaters etc a pc would use a tiny amount of electricity comparatively
