Optane memory for secondary hard drive

Hi all,

I came across the following website about optane memory.

Currently, I have a SSD for my OS and am considering to buy a 32GB optane memory to pair with my secondary hard drive (Steam games). Not sure whether will there really be massive performance increase like what the website has stated?

Moi use HDD for OS and Storage.

It will make a difference if you are RAM limited, running 3GB or so of memory. Most people are using at least 8GB nowadays.

Massive performance increase in games, no. Performance in games is dependent on the CPU and GPU.

Loading time improved, yes.

And by the way, do note that there are requirements to use Optane. For example, you need at least a Kaby Lake system among other requirements. I suggest you read up on it first before taking the plunge.

Currently i have a 256 gb ssd and a 3tb hdd.

My ssd is now full, with Windows 10 and 3 games on it. Now i have to install more games on my 3tb HDD, starting with final fantasy xv as the game files are huge. Future games will have to be on the HDD.

Will getting optane be a wise investment for games on my HDD? I am talking load times and in game loading to minimise stutters.

Seriously thinking about getting 16gb optane to test things out.

Bought 2 piece 16gb optane for $20 . Don't know what to do now , because I don't have a mobo with M.2 .

Not sure if using a Pcie to m.2 works for it or not.

I'm curious what your rig specs. Afaik, Optane is only supported with Intel 7th Gen Kaby Lake onward with compatible 200-series mobo (or 300 series with 8th Gen). Will adding Optane to anything older works actually?

I doubt so. Intel always enforce some restriction to segregate their products, and force you to pay more for the added features. I recall back then when they first introduce the concept of caching to SSDs, they limit it only to the Core i Series and only for the Z series motherboards. The likes of Pentium, Celerons, and older processors/ mobos are not supported.

If you can afford these, you should just go for a 1TB SSD for your games. To be honest, a cache is ultimately a stop gap solution. In the event that the game is not in the cache, you are still going to experience the slow loading time because it is being read from your mechanical drive.

Agree on those supporting bigger capacity SSD rather than choosing Optane. The logic works almost like SSHD.

However, if you already bought the Optane memory, then just use it ba. Otherwise, return it and get a refund if possible.

As good as the underlying tech is, Optane (in its current form) is remains a glorified ssd cache that incidentally also makes it convenient for OEMs to sell more HDDs in their systems.
