Hi, I am thinking of going to Osaka and Kyoto on my own to visit the castles, temples etc on my own. is it easy to travel the subway/bus on my own? cheaper too to go on my own?

or is it better to go via tour?

For Osaka and Kyoto, you can easily go on Free and Easy.
Most train stations have their names in English.
You can also get free English maps from tourist info counters in Japan.

For more info on various places of interests, you can go to japan-guide website.

If you want to order food, many restaurants have sample food displays outside their shop so what I did was I took a photo of the food I wanted before I enter the restaurant, and then just show them the pic when I am placing my order.

For train directions, I use hyperdia website to help plan for my train journeys. (since you won't be taking Shinkansen, so just uncheck the Shinkansen and Nozomi options so that your search results won't show Shinkansen train journeys options)

Just rent will do. Read Bro Can threads, he has instructions for those that want to rent the sim or mifi from him.

thank you. are there any hotels near the airport in Osaka? is taxi fare very expensive over there?

Depends on your income level! haha. anyway taxis are slightly cheaper than in Tokyo but don't take them for long distances....
