Hellos all,

I am looking to overhaul my rig as I think my current setup is about to GG. Aka for the old birds yesh my Z77 PMS again and last night suddenly all my sata ports didnt want to work.

Was hoping that my rig can last a bit longer being an Ivy and how each new set of CPUs like not much different but I think better safe than sorry. Worst is if it dies when I need it the most.

Currently this is my plan:

1. i7 6700K with Z170 mobo
2. 32GB DDR4 Ram
3. Full Tower Casing that can fit my 980Ti
4. AIO WaterCooling for CPU
5. 1TB SSD for Photo Storage
6. 4TB WD Black for Misc Work Storage

While haswell-e does look tempting with the extra cores, not sure if I will need them compared to the new features that Z170 brings. Currently looking at the Asus Z170-PRO / Asus Maximus VIII Ranger or MSI Z170A Gaming M5. No more Asrock for me. Ram dunno if get in SG better or get from Amazon and also will need advice on which full tower casing to get that can fit in my Zotac 980Ti overclocked (that thing is huge).

Thanks in advanced for the advice.

Like what you mentioned in the other time during bbq, i suggest you head straight for haswell e instead.

Come again? What are the things you would be doing on this rig?

i think the most heavy thing i will be doing is editing 40+ megapixel photos... unless i need to carry out digital forensics operations and run tons of VMs... :o

any good full tower casing to recommend?

Corsair 760T.

Displays the goodness of the PC components for all to see with its full side panel window. :D

Also, go for Haswell-E if needed. i7-5820k. 6 cores so that CPU-intensive photo-editing such as panorama stitching can be done much much faster.

Ok just skip straight to Haswell E instead. You won't be far off even if broadwell E would release. Just make sure you get those x99 boards that are being refreshed with type C USB connectors that might come in handy soon.

If you don't need fanciful stuffs, the Msi x99A SLI plus would be a good choice together with 5820k.

Ram currently the US market seems cheaper to buy than Sg, especially you will need a lot more Rams for editing purposes. Go for 64gb if you need.

Aio cooler, this would be tricky, 5820k not so easy to cool. Especially on overclocked. Might need to find Corsair gtx h100i and use a good static pressure optimised fans such as Noctuas ippc or GT.

Next is ssd, if you have the money to splurge, you may wanna invest on a nvme instead rather than a normal ssd, your photos can be large and might wanna store inside a proper hdd raid 1 config, or unless you have a NAS then probably a single 4tb drive would be enough.

Lastly Chassis to support the 980ti Zotac, iirc it is a 300mm card. So generally I would recommend the all new Corsair 600C, also can show off your 980ti fans lol

Taking a quick look at the pricing:

Fuwell

Intel i7 5820K + Asus X99-A USB3.1 ~ $1021
Corsair 600C Inverse ATX Full Tower ~ $239
Corsair H100i GTX AIO WC ~ $185

If I am not going to overclock (yeah dont oc these days), is the H100i overkill?

Amazon
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4 2666MHz C16 ~ USD$199.99

Hmm storage I think I go access my current setup first, Somehow still prefer using my 1TB Raptor as the main photo storage but dunno how long before it dies.

If u look at PC Themes pricelist, i7-5820k + MSI X99A-SLI PLUS cost only $937. So yeah, some money saved.

If ur current H100 can still salvage, no need to purposely buy a H100i GTX. Can use back to save money.

Save the dough, just go Msi x99a sli. Got everything you will need.

To KWSW,

Sorry Bro. I seem to have a problem sending PM here. Don't know why.

Anyway, while I was reading some posts here, saw that you had a Creative Soundblaster Recon 3D Fatality Pro in your rig. If you're ever thinking of selling it to upgrade or whatever, I might be interested in buying it off you.

Please SMS/WhatsApp me at 81434468 to deal.

Thanks.
