It depends on what do you need it for? Like for my case, I work on my MBA using bootcamp because I needed the dedicated h/w instead of sharing it with Mac. If you are running on iMac with 16GB Ram, you can run Parallels or VMWare.

Boot camp for speed, parallels for convenience at the expense of speed

Definitely bootcamp for me. It's the raw speed that really matters. Besides, the convenience of parallel is under-rated and you need to pay for it. Bootcamp is free by the way.

If you have 16GB RAM I suppose parallels performance should be good? Perhaps not as comparable as bootcamp but close enough?

i think you guys have been making a big mistakes here. even you have 32gb the performance it's also relatively similar to having 8gb ram. reason being parallels/vmware are just virtual machine...they don't make full use of your system hardware.

for best performance just go for bootcamp. i have both bootcamp and parallels installed. for gaming which requires all the necessary hardware performance i will boot into bootcamp. for fast and easy access for some documents and editing i will just use parallels.

lastly if you are getting a mac just to use windows... what's the reason for getting mac then?

From my experience with Win 7 & parallels, you can't. But I remember I read from somewhere the user is able to activate same Win 7 with bootcamp & parallels. Maybe my steps is incorrect or it could be my Win 7 is OEM also. You can try to goggle for more informations.

For those with Bootcamp with either Windows 7 or 8, how much hard disk space does it take up?

Keep in mind that updates and all take up space as well. So even if the minimum specs says 20GB for e.g. it will turn out more than that.

You can do a bootcamp first. If you need to use parallel, boot from parallel which means you only activate your window8 in bootcamp :)

I personally use Parallels as bootcamp for me is troublesome as you need to restart your computer to boot into either one of them but for Parallels or VMWare, you can use it while doing your mac stuffs. It is very convenient.

And I choose Parallels over VMWare is that the graphics performance is better, just for you to know :).
