Compact Modular Part-time Diploma Programmes

4 To cater to the needs of working adults, the polytechnics have revised their part-time Diploma programmes to be more compact and modular. Course durations for the revised part-time Diploma programmes have been halved, from five years (1,800 hours) to approximately two and a half years (900 hours) without compromising rigour or quality. Compacting the course duration is possible by recognising the work experience of adult learners and focusing the curriculum on work-relevant knowledge and skills. Content more relevant to school leavers has been omitted.

5 With the revised framework, most part-time polytechnic Diploma programmes will now be offered as five distinct modular certificates (MCs) of about 180 training hours each. Each MC is aimed at providing learners with skills in core industry domains, which employers would value. The structure will allow an adult learner to customise the pace of his or her own learning. The learner will be awarded a part-time polytechnic Diploma qualification upon accumulation of the relevant five MC s within a five-year validity period.

Recognition of Alternative Qualifications

6 To take into account the more diverse academic and working experiences of adult learners, selected Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) and Workplace Literacy and Numeracy (WPLN) qualifications can be used for admission into part-time Diploma programmes1. This will facilitate better linkages between part-time polytechnic diploma programmes and WSQ qualifications, and expand upgrading options for PMETs.

Revised Part-time Diploma Programmes

7 Ngee Ann Polytechnic will be re-launching its three part-time Diploma programmes under the new framework, in October 2011: These are:
Diploma in Business Practice (Logistics Management)
Diploma in Engineering (Electrical)
Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical)

8 Other existing part-time polytechnic Diploma programmes will be re-aligned to the revised structure over time.

To me, in qualification level terms, a spec dip is equal to an adv dip, as both usually required a minimum polytechnic diploma for entry.

Poly Dip vs Poly Spec Dip

Nitec in Electronics have 6 Core Modules & 2 Specialisation Modules = Total 8 modules.

The Specialisation major can chose from Computer & Networking, Instrumentation, Mobile Devices, Wafer Fabrication and Wireless LAN.

You have a Nitec in Electronics (Computer & Networking) & want to apply a job in Wafer Fabrication Factory but they only empoly Nitec in Electronics (Wafer Fabrication).

Instead of getting the whole 8 modules to get a Nitec in Electronics (Wafer Fabrication), you only needs to top up & study 2 Specialisation Modules in Wafer Fabrication to be awarded in Nitec in Electronics (Wafer Fabrication).

Poly Dip have almost the same idea of Nitec. You may have Dip in Electronics (Computer & Networking) but factory only empoly Wafer Fabrication gradautes. You needs to get a Dip in Electronics (Wafer Fabrication) & in order to do that, you must retake all the whole Core Modules in the course again which you do not wish to waste $ & time on that.

This is where the purpose of a Spec Dip come in. You go for your Poly Spec Dip in Wafer Fabrication & together with your poly Dip in Electronics (Computer & Networking) to look for job at the factory & the empolyer will consider this as a Poly Dip in Electronics (Wafer Fabrication) & empoly you.

But from my observacion from my years of working exp, I find that most of the HR in Sg do not practise this & this mean getting a Poly Spec Dip is a waste of time & $ to use it for job hunting.

whats the diff in terms of use? thanks!! :)

DipTech is awarded by NP. This is to different between full time & part time because of different standard.

Eg: DipTech(Electrical) is part time while Dip in Electrical Engineering is full time & both can apply for Electrical Technician Licence.

However DipTech can only apply to Local Uni with related course like NTU BEng (EEE) 1st year even if you have good GPA while Dip in Elect Eng with good GPA can apply any course 1st year or 2nd year of related course like NTU BEng (EEE)

what about diploma in technology?

The only affecting part is highest education & as for working benefits from their Cert such as LEW, FSM & etc are not affected.

In the past DipTech cannot even go Local Uni but now can only selected courses at their 1st year.

Dip Tech standard is lower?
