Assuming i put my old 500GB HDD into my new rig.
so now got a old 500GB HDD with OS and files and new empty 2TB HDD.

If i boot up my system like that, will my old OS and files appear?

unlikely for OS to get lost. It's information anyway.

Unless it gets corrupted, so best way is to still back up information.

since by conventional means i should hook up 2 empty HDD to the rig, then install OS and drivers.
now is everything is on 1 and the other is empty. A bit confused, haha

I am assuming your OS is Microsoft Windows. If your new rig motherboard is the same as the old one then it will boot OK. If it's a new motherboard, it will trigger an activation and if OS is OEM version, it will fail activation as your OS is tied to your old system. You need a new key. Next, you have to remove the old drivers and install new drivers.

No it will not. But however is best to back up first. Im not sure your new rig will be able to boot up that OS in your old HDD. Considering the fact that your new HDD is empty. And your OS in the old HDD may have an issue with the drivers that are installed for your previous Motherboard.

Best is to back up, and reformat that old HDD or Nuke that old HDD and then put it into your new rig and do a fresh installation of the OS.

Yes, all the above comment are relevant if you are not using windows 8.

For window 8, i had changed my motherboard 2 times already.
And all the O/S and information is all well intact, including secondary drive.
No need to re-install window or whatsoever.

yeah, i'm using windows 7.
most likely formating it before bring it down to ask the shop to help me assemble when buying the rig then
