PC time and date lagging......CMOS battery problem ?

i've been using my pc for 6 years liao........last 2 days the date and time lagging........i went to Windows Control Panel to synchronize the internet time...........so maybe solve problem for good ?

or need to change the CMOS battery ? i read that if change the battery, need to result default CMOS or BIOS default settings...........like very complicated leh..........what if i don't replace the battery ?

Just swap the battery.

If the battery is flat, the motherboard will lose the settings everytime the mains is off and you need to sync the time at every power on.

The moment you remove your cmos battery, your settings will auto reset to default.. Additionally, when you boot up to post screen, your mobo will most likely inform you that settings has been reverted to default.

so with the settings auto reset to default...........what settings are affected ?

will it affect the data on my hard disk...........or my bookmarks ........or anything ?

only the bios setting reset to default nia la. nth will be lost on your hdd or on your desktop

so do i need to do any settings after i change the battery or i just turn on pc and it'll work as usual ?

i'm thinking if it only affects the time and date then i'll just leave it lah..........

affects date and time of your pc, but please dun leave it, cos iirc some pc bios time and date will keep popping error signal in your windows.

so eventually u will still need to go to the bios to update to the correct date and time.

ok..............i only worry about having to make complex set-up settings.............becoz i know very very little about computers

Your flat CMOS battery already return all settings to default. Just change the battery.

Ur time lagging meaning few hours/days lagging or few years lag? Normally flat battery will reset to default date, which is ard year 2000.

If few hours lag then it's clock drift, just keep your time constantly sync to NTP.

Some of my machines without NTP enabled can drift for few months after a while

if your clock is off by a few mins, Windows time server had some issues. it was off by a few mins for me. I set my PC to sync to google time server and everything was ok from there.

instructions from Google Public NTP

Open the Control Panel.
Click the "Date and Time" icon.
Choose the "Internet Time" tab. (This will not be available if your PC is part of a domain. In that case, it will synchronize time with the domain controller. You can configure the controller to use Google Public NTP.)
Click the "Change settings..." button.
Check the box "Synchronize with an Internet time server".
Next to "Server:", enter time.google.com.
Done!
