I currently have a old desktop (i5-2400) running as a PleX server. Transcoding 4K h.265 videos to 1080p wont happen seamlessly (it will play for a minute and pause for several seconds. Direct play and other lower resolution videos will play smoothly. Does anyone else has a PleX server capable of transcoding 4K videos? If so what are your server specs? I am thinking of swapping out the i5 for an i7 2600.

Estimating the requirements of a 4K Encode to 1080P will require about 15,000+ Passmark CPU Score.

CPU model: Passmark score, MSRP SGD price, 4k transcoding capability for Plex Media Server

AMD Epyc 7601: 51,207 (est.), $4229 (not really affordable!), can transcode three 4k streams concurrently
Intel i9-7980XE: 32,618 (est.), $2693, can transcode two 4k streams concurrently
Intel i9-7960X: 31,224 (est.), $2289, can transcode two 4k streams concurrently
Intel i9-7940X: 30,248 (est.), $1885, can transcode two 4k streams concurrently
AMD ThreadRipper 1950X: 26,350, $1350, can transcode one 4k stream
Intel i9-7920X: 24,255 (est.), $1600, can transcode one 4k stream
AMD ThreadRipper 1920X: 23,200 (est.), $1075, can transcode one 4k stream
Intel i9-7900X: 23,068, $1350, can transcode one 4k stream
Intel i7-7820X: 19,159, $810, can transcode one 4k stream
Intel i7-6900K: 17,980, $1350, can transcode one 4k stream
AMD ThreadRipper 1900X: 17,211 (est.), $740, can transcode one 4k stream
AMD Ryzen 1800X: 15,419, $565, can transcode one 4k stream
AMD Ryzen 1700X: 14,663, $438, may stutter
Intel i7-8700K: 14,577 (est.), $540, may stutter
Intel i7-8700: 14,452 (est.), $470, may stutter
AMD Ryzen 1700: 13,816, $365, will stutter

You may wish to upgrade your Plex server to a Ryzen 7 1700X overclocked and liquid cooled to 4.0GHz or get a 1800X...

Where do you get your system requirements list from? From Plex own statics they list only up till 1080p unless I am missing something.

I have a pc with a 1700x stock speed tired transcoding the same Plex video with it and it only used 30%cpu
