Portable SSD recommendations

Online I'm mainly seeing Lacie, Transcend, Verbatim and Iomega. Does anyone any own there and would care to share their opinion(s)?

Why do you need a SSD as an external drive?
Is speed really that important?

You can try another alternative, which is to get a internal SSD and then buy a HDD enclosure...

Not speed, but I need something very safe for knocks, bumps or the occasional fall from the 4th storey. I was actually looking at a "rugged" external HDD drive like the Lacie or Buffalo drive but I've decided to get a SSD instead.

Thanks for the advice about buying a normal drive and a case separately, that is something I have considered already and will do for a bigger drive that I need. But for my first drive of just 128 GB that I need for something else I just want to pick up a ready-made product that works straight out of the box.

Anyone use an Iomega drive? Just asking because I have a good price on one from Amazon.co.uk and they will ship it here, so it comes out cheaper than Amazon.com even...

I ended up buying the Iomega drive, 64 GB, and to my surprise on the reverse of the box it reads "Assembled in Singapore."

Aren't thumbdrives supposed to be much, much, much, much, much more slower than a proper ssd?

Are those manufacturer specs or are you getting those speeds having tried them yourself on your computer?

Regular hard drive sequential read/write is around 150+ MB/s or 1200Mb/s. Latency is another issue, also try moving a whole bunch of small files.

To TS, if you connect a SSD to the USB port you're also going to get latency issues. The controller was not designed for USB

Nope you're never going to see the same performance of thumbdrive VS SSD. Another issue is generally as thumbdrives get bigger their ability to move tons of tiny files deteriorates, this is from my own experience using a 4GB and 8GB flash drive from the same family. SSDs on the other hand get faster. You're not just paying for flash memory there's also the active flash controller inside an SSD and that makes all the difference.
