as title suggest, in this scenario. . .
- current m1 user ,
- able to do an early recontract
- but do not wish to follow m1,
- wants to go for singtel

can one go over singtel by porting over and by paying the early recontract fees
or die die have to wait to contract end?

thanks

I believe that you are on M1 Eligible to recontract without fee. If it is you are still on contract with M1, if you port-over to other telco, you will be liable to a fees for early contract termination. It is based on your monthly subscription fee x number of month due for the expiry of contract,

I advice you to call M1 to verify your status and your intention of porting out to other telco. They will advice you when is the date is right to port-out without penalty.

Porting means two things:
1) Signing up a new service with your new provider.
2) Terminating with your current provider.

With #2, you trigger early termination penalties.

The early contract clause was introduced precisely to bind customers to them by giving them an incentive. But it does not mean your contract term has ended, but rather they are allowing the two to run concurrently.

Hypothetically, if you recontracted with M1 3 months early and then terminated within a month of doing so, you have to pay for breaking two contracts with the respective penalties (the longer contract has a higher compensation) - the new contract does not void the old, but merely runs concurrently.

Hope this gives you a clearer idea.

I am trying to port my m1 line to giga/ Vivifi. Take for example my contract expiry date is 20 Sep 2021. Is it better to port after? Or best 1-2 days before? Because there will be a few hours disruption during the porting right?

I will port in immediately after contract expired. Unless you are confident that they will port over 1 or 2 days after your contract expired. If they are efficient enough, port in on the date of expiry, you will be penalized for early termination fees

Conservatively, after. Archive your contracts so you can monitor the important dates.

But I had ported out from StarHub to Singtel last year to time it on the day of the end of contract and didn't have to pay a penalty. I signed my contract many years ago on 21 Aug, and visited Singtel shop on 20 Aug last year. They refunded me the full month's credit.

With the sub-brands (giga/gomo/maxx) and MVNOs, the porting is a bit more complex, because you should ideally time to port out some 10 days before end of contact as they tend to pre-bill up to 7 working days before the start of new month. If you're somehow bound by a contract or a minimum term of service, then your best course might be to wait out the full time and "lose" another month's subscription (cos these telcos don't refund the unused portion). Check your contract terms carefully for details.

PS: At least mobile contracts are clear as they start on the date you sign contracts. Home broadband contracts are a mess as they claim the contract starts only when service is activated because of delays at the NLT end, which can be weeks after you signed the contract. It's messy when you want to coordinate service porting.

I am keen to know how you do, and the outcome. If convenient, post back here once you have port-over.
