Problems when shutting down laptop

Hi I've been having problems whenever I shut down my laptop. Sometimes it does this http://postimg.org/image/i82uct3nv/ and I get the blue screen of death(sort of). Other times it gets stuck at the shutting down screen of Windows, the blue one with the words Shutting Down, and in the end it just kind of hangs there no matter how long I leave it there for.

Also, recently my mouse ceases to work when I open my laptop after leaving it for a while and it goes to sleep. Restarting my computer solves this, but it's been happening more and more often as well. Could be because my laptop is old, but any advice?

This could be a harddisk, RAM or software issue.

Which your brand and model by the way?
