Professional Programming Certs ?

Hi !

I just wanted to know if there are any programming certs that is recognized industry wide? (Can be language or non-language specific)

I see Cisco networking certs and MS certs. But I never see anything to do with programming.

Most companies in SG dun recognise programming certs. Cert could help you secure a job offer but not salary increment in yearly appraisal. Below are the s/w dev certs I have.

EC Council Secure Programmer .NET (ECSP.NET)
ScrumMaster from Scrum Alliance

Now I am studying for CSSLP exam. CSSLP is s/w dev security focused cert from ISC2.

Hi nyvrem, MCSD Web Applications and Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer are popular certs for developers.

Was looking at NTUC IT hub for some of the classes offered. The prices are really expensive. Might need to take a rain check on this.

$3k~$5 for the classes are really out of my league.

If you dun mind not having certs, you can take online streaming courseware like pluralsight at your own leisure pace. They are much affordable. However I must say pluralsight is more primarily MS and .NET focused, through they have courses on other technologies.

If interested, can also take free course at Coursera or other MOOC, they do award cert but you have to do the assignments and assessments and pay a small fee.

Programming certs in my opinion are too much for novice with little portfolio. No offence to those that already have it. Unlike CCNA, MCSA and so forth are certification to your competency in operating a product or standard, programming have little standard to talk about. If you only knows Erlang and Lisp and Assembly Languages, would I be able to tell you are a good developer or not ? I could at most say you probably is not the expert to weld a Java programming language which is in need, or you are not exactly that suitable for .NET programming since there are technologies a company require around it. But there is no way to tell if you are good or not.

It will be more tangible if your portfolio include things of what kind of projects you have did in your past works and what kind of special skill sets you may have possess. Knowing you pass all Java programming languages construct doesn't mean you are a creative programmer, it just means you can "speak" Java. In analogy, it means having you can do English well, doesn't make you a good story writer.

Beyond a certain level, those certifications are just like old medals hanging on the wall, they wouldn't bring you to new battlegrounds. I would like to suggest that you concentrate on building your portfolio instead of certification. If you need to go attend a course, go with the intention to learn something or something more general such as PMP, Agile certification, Product specific certification and general knowledge like security from ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEMS WEB APPLICATION PENTESTER(r) Web Application Security Auditing Certification (OSWAP)

I'm actually doing that right now. Taking some free courses in Coursera like CS101 and Intro to Java that's going to start next month. I guess that will do for now. If i'm really into it, might consider a diploma program later on.

I am not a developer, but have to read source code when doing a review for them. I need a course that does security programming

ECSP.NET is very basic and mainly focused on ASP.NET. Whereas CSSLP is too generic. You are better off to buying/borrowing security book to read.
