PSU 101

Hi there guys,i tried reading a write up on tomshardware on PSUs and that got me even more confused.All i got from it was different "rails" supplied different amounts of power.So i have to take care not to overload a particular rail,whatever that means.

So can someone help to explain what PSUs work and how to use it properly?
