Qns about optical drive

Does anybdy still using optical drive these days? If yes whut kind of optical drive would u recommend/i shld go for. do i have to buy those expensive type of optical drive or i can just buy those 20+ dollars optical drive? Mainly for inserting anti virus software,microsoft office,windows 10 and mayb games. Thx

Just get a cheap drive if you think you need it. Most applications and games can be downloaded, so no need for an optical drive in most cases. If you are installing OS, best to download from the net and copy it to a thumb drive. By doing this, the installation can be significantly faster because the optical drive is actually very very slow.

I would recommend an external optical drive instead of 5.25"
Get a cheap 1 will do as its good to at least have a spare disc reader/writer in case

Most of the anti virus only provides serial key when u purchase. They do not provide the disc anymore. Have to download from the website which is stated in the box.

Well. Its as good as dead.

With increasing speed of internet, there is no reason to use an optical drive. Everything can be downloaded from the net and get it installed.


Be it anti virus, microsoft office, windows os and games. The only time that you will probably need would be music cd rip.

I still use an external bluray drive. I buy cds till date. Till music website starts to sell more variety of lossless music, then i will ditch the optical drive for good.

I salvaged the DVD optical drive (model GCC-4242N) from my used IBM Thinkpad laptop that is malfunctioning, so that I may use it as an external DVD drive for my other working laptop that does not come with a built-in DVD drive. I searched on the internet that a slimline SATA-to-USB adapter will be required to connect the SATA port of the drive to the USB port of laptop. A slimline SATA connector has 7+6 pins, but the SATA port of my drive appears to have over 20 pin slots, like 25 or so, and the slots are continuous without any separator that I usually find on internet between the data and power pins in a SATA connector. As I can’t find any suitable SATA-to-USB adapter on online platforms that would appear to fit my DVD drive, may I check where else would I be able to find a suitable adapter in my case? Thanks!

Just get a USB DVD Drive, Sim Lim should still have some maybe as low as $20.

Just buy a USB DVD drive, it's like $20+ online. Got one recently just to read in all the past CD/DVDs that my family had from major events 10+ years ago

Suggest you convert all that into .iso or mkv. CDs and DVDs have a shelf life.

That's basically what I did, except didn't bother with conversion, just copied everything into laptop and checked can playback/view.

I put mine into storeroom after realising I never touch it for the last 7years........
