Question on PSU requirements

I recently upgraded my Mobo, CPU and GPU 2 months ago but kept my PSU.
System was working fine up until 2 days ago when I installed the latest Nvidia Driver update, my GPU then couldn't output video to monitor anymore and kept giving black screen after BIOS boot. Even when booting into BIOS, screen was flickering with a lot of blinking lines everywhere.

Went down to RMA and person said it was due to GPU Artifact issue and is going to do a 1-1 replacement for me since still under warranty (phew).

Read online that 3070 minimum requirement is 650W. So I was wondering whether my PSU is actually enough to power my rig. Worried that the GPU died because PSU is not sufficient so need to upgrade PSU, or maybe I was just unlucky and got a faulty GPU.

Listing down all the components in my rig (all components are about 3-5 years old except CPU/Mobo/GPU):
PSU: Super Flower HX 650W 80+ Gold
CPU: i7-10700k
Mobo: Asus Maximus XII Hero (Wi-Fi)
GPU: Aorus 3070 Master 8G
RAM: 4x 8GB Corsair Vengence RGB Pro
SSD: Samsung Evo 860 250GB
M.2: Crucial P2 1TB
HDD: WD Blue 1TB
CPU Fan: CM Hyper 212 Black
Case Fan: 4x LL120 Corsair
RGB Strip: 4x Corsair RGB LED Lighting with Commander Pro

If not enough wattage, PSU will just shut the system down once it triggers the overpower protection and won't damage your system if the OPP worked as intended.

Can't find a review on the 3070 master 8G but a gigabyte 3070 gaming OC peaked up to 296W in gaming scenario whereas a 10700k peaked at 190w on stock settings in multicore stress test. I would say you still got some wattage headroom assuming you don't go for heavy overclocks.

I do not do much heavy overclocking so I think my PSU has enough wattage. Guess I just got unlucky and got a faulty unit, hopefully the new one does not give any issue.

Generally, the gpu manufacturer already stated the min power requirement. If you wish to go lower and which you possibly can, and that in turn causes display issues due to the gpu requiring more power then you are asking for it.

why dun google those PSU calculator to estimate your PSU requirement instead?

I actually did go outervision website to calculate. I accidentally put 8x CPU 10700k (cos I thought it was how many CPU cores) and calculation came out as 1200+w which was very wrong to me. Then I tried Coolermaster website and calculation came out as 475w.

Since the difference was very big I came to forum to get second opinion.

After seeing your post I went back to outervision website and realized I should put 1x CPU 10700k instead and it calculated as 504w. Which is similar to Coolermaster website and what the othe responses are saying. So I guess my 650w PSU is sufficient.

TS, how old is your PSU? Power supply degrades over time, so don't assume rated wattage after warranty period.

for mid to high end psu, can expect 5-10 years (basically warranty period). ur particular psu should have 3 years of warranty left, so should still be no problem.

Get those with 10 or 12 years warranty for peace of mind, PSU is like the heart people tend to overlook it and put more into cpu or gpu budget, with current gen GPU 750w and above seems to be the new normal now
