[Question] Types of Database

I am trying to make a website, using centos7, apache, php.. but i am not sure what database should i use, theres mysql, postgresql mongodb etc..

Any recommendation or things that i need to keep a look out for when choosing which to use?

Either MySQL or PostgreSQL. Basically you should at this level use RDBMS instead of NoSQL. Master your relational DB skill set before you move on to using NoSQL. NoSQL do not conform to ACID, and will require you to handle more transactional level concepts instead of having a proper RDBMS to empower you with such feature.

Between PostgreSQL and MySQL, the latter will be more popular and much easier for you to find public codes to help you understand it. PostgreSQL while also very capable, have a slightly less polished client toolkit.

However for your use, both RDBMS have more than enough features to cover and will perform as good, so choosing between them is just a matter of preference. I don't think you will touch any of the advance features from either of these 2 RDBMS to start comparing which is better.

I hope you're not planning to store credit card info or bank account info in your own database.

That is something worth noting, no one should store payment information unless you are PCI DSS certified.

Anyway I just recall that most web hosts offering LAMP stack and cheap shared hosting usually provides only MySQL but not PostgresQL or MongoDB. So your choice is quite clear cut, because there's no choice anyway.

If you want to insist on using PostgresQL or MongoDB, you may need to get the more expensive VPS or cloud hosting. This gives you access to the Linux command line to install and setup your preferred database.

Thanks for the reply all. Probably using mysql then. haha. Not gonna store any kind of money info though but i am planning to do something like $10 = 1000 points kind of stuff. Will try my best to secure the php and sqlinjection attempt..lol
