if i would like to buy an index, lets say jim rogers agri index, the index is at 1000, and the minimum purchase is 1 lot, does it mean i have to fork out 1000 000 to buy a lot???

No, you buy an ETF of the index (eg. STI ETF - code ES3.SI)

Lets ay i would like to buy RJA, which is at about 8USD per share, i would have to pay 8000 USD a lot right? Do brokerages offer decent exchange rates?
