questions on commuter train

I see alot of posts saying the commuter train arrives more frequently than reserved seat trains and you don't need to pre-book tickets.

How do we identify a commuter train?

I'd like to take this train to and from Taipei to ruifang or keelung. What destionation should I look for on the signboard?

Can we just sit anywhere on the train?

It will state local train/區間車。

Train to keelung will write to keelung. For anything else, it will make a brief stop at ruifang station.

The signboards will show clearly the direction it will head, be it 南迴，北迴列車。
You will board the ones that states 北迴 to ur destination of keelung or ruifang.

Unsure, feel free to ask. Taiwaneses are generally a friendlier lot than us. Safe you the trouble of taking the wrong direction only to find yourself 100miles away from Taipei.

TMS to Ruifang ..... Then Ruifang to JIUFEN OR SHIFEN
Ruifang is mid point

Keelung if u going keelung


Yilan/ hualien if u going jiufen/jinguashi/pingxi/houtong/shifen.
Note: change transport at ruifang.

the sign mean end station.
so if u r going to keelung (from taipei) yes, cos keelung is the end station

if u r going jiufen/pingsi area, den u haf to alight at ruifang. for this case, the sign dun show ruifang, cos ruifang is not the end station(just 1 of the passby station only) usually is would b su-ao, hualien, taitung etc etc

however if u r going to jiufen/pingsi area, u can lookout for 北迴, cos this is the line, the train took

if u still confused, den reach platform, ask the train master. cos tpe platform can b quite confusing (sometimes, where 2-3 trains come within 10 mins n due to the diff in train code, some train do passby the station u going while some train is end station (at the stion u r goin)

Eg, tpe to hualien. some train is end at hualien while some train is end at taitung(passby hualien) meaning both train do bring u to hualien(say u r goin to hualien)

Perhaps you can try using this train timetable information system by Taiwan Railway Administration to check the train schedule and how long they will take. Not too sure how punctual and accurate the trains schedules are but at least this will serve as a rough guide.

You must be there earlier, if not you risk chasing after the local train. Not all local trains are the same number of carriages.
