QUT or SIM GE?

GPA 3.2; graduated from NYP's Animation course last year. Debating between going overseas to study design (graphic, illustration etc) or to study Logistics & Supply Chain at SIM GE.

---
I decided to go work for about 1 year before going to uni (so as to earn some money and have time to think about what I want to study) and ended up working as an admin assistant in a shipyard. After learning some new stuff about L&SC, I thought, "Hey, this could be something useful to study in uni."

The problem is that I don't really have much passion in business-related course, am very uncertain how I'd fare in it (I get to skip a year, but I know nothing about business stuff), and I'd most likely have to deal with maths (in some form or another) again. However, my father is most happy with me studying this as 1) I'll still be in SG, 2) fees are still affordable, and 3) job prospects seemed better (as compared to designing)?

However, in my heart, I still wanted to go overseas. I decided on staying within design courses as I could most likely get advanced standing, and it was something I'm really passionate about.

If I were to head overseas, I'd most likely go for QUT's Creative Industries course (though I'm still researching on other unis). Based on the info that my friend had gotten at one of the study fairs, it would cost about 64K AUD (for everything) for about 1.5 years. Of course, my dad isn't very keen about it, and the only things I worry about are the job prospects and the total cost involved.

I still have about 1 month+ to think about it, since I've already applied for the L&SC degree at SIM GE. To follow my passion or to do something more practical?

EDIT: Was thinking of going to UK for BA Illustration, but due to the unstable policies and really expensive fees, I've decided to stay in SG :D Oh well I can always get my MA overseas.

yes U are looking ~aud$64k maybe U have to budget aud$70k.
cause we still missing Student services and amenities fee etc. fees and 60 weeks of living amounts to aud$64K, note a yr is 54weeks, if u pay for 40 weeks of living.. u moving all your stuff out every holiday? if u still renting U need to pay money.
Course - QUT Students

if $$ is not an issue follow your passion. $$ is an issue its really hard.
have U look at design schools in SG?
ie
LASALLE College of the Arts
The Glasgow School of Art

What about trying for NTU ADM? Should be cheaper than going to Australia. Your GPA is above the IGP. You just need a portfolio, I think you stand a good chance. The applications just closed however. You might have to wait for next year to apply.

Thanks for the additional insights (・v・) Money is somewhat of an issue, 'cos my dad mentioned taking up a study loan if I were to go overseas. Loans = repayment = having a decent job in the future so that I can pay it back. A colleague of mine has suggested getting the loans only for the tuition fees, and told me to go check with the banks for a breakdown (which I intend to do so later this month).

I've considered both Lasalle and SIT's GSA course, but tbh, I rather study design overseas than in SG. 1) I want to know how the arts scene is like overseas, 2) access to a wider range of art materials (wanting to try out some good quality papers but it's not available here, so I'd have to ship them in), 3) get an overseas job? (this is a 50:50; I may return to SG, or I may not).

Also, the courses available here are all focused on one area, unlike QUT's Creative Industries, which allows student the "flexibility to explore your creative talents within two or three study areas, including areas across QUT.", which is what I really like.

If I were to stay in SG, I'd choose to study something different.

I did consider NTU ADM, but only the Visual Communication course caught my attention (I've no intention on continuing Animation).

The study areas are very wide, with a range of animation, creative writing, dance studies, literary studies, TV & film etc.

Bank loans are only for tuition fees, not for living expenses. The bank will give the money direct to the uni. They don't lend you the money, as in give you the money and you decide how much to give to uni and how much for personal expenses.

If you want to stay in the creative industries, look at interactive media, digital media, etc. Unless you are only doing a year at qut, if not the fees are way too high and over rated, though it does have a pretty good rep. All my friends who went to qut ci have pretty decent good paying jobs. I went to qca and is doing pretty well.

Also, it sounds good on paper, "flexibility to explore your creative talents within two or three study areas, including areas across QUT." Most courses have pre-requisites. And most courses will clash with the timetable of your major classes. No doubt the program is good, but for the price, there are other comparable options.

Ah okay, thanks for the explanation. Have only been doing some minor reading up on bank loans.

That's good to know; a decent job overseas or in SG? What did you study at QCA?

I do know of pre-reqs for certain units but didn't really think of clashing timetables. In general, I don't think there's a need for portfolio to enter the course (can't find anything about it in the entry requirement section).

What other comparable options do you have in mind? Sorry if it sounds like I'm asking to be spoon-fed, but I'm just afraid that I might have overlooked things while researching the few unis that are listed on NYP's advanced standing list.

Sounds like what any other university provides. You can always take different modules. I think most degrees here also require you to take about 25%-30% of modules that are outside your major. I believe NUS calls it 'breadth' and NTU calls it 'unrestricted electives'. In any case, how much do you think you can explore within 2 years of university study? Taking merely 1-2 modules does not make a very comprehensive area of study.

I just don't think that taking an overseas arts degree gives a very good ROI. The risk of not making it is pretty high as compared to other degrees.

"You will choose a creative industries major and may select a second major to develop a significant depth of knowledge and skill in two discipline areas. Alternatively, you might prefer to develop a wide breadth of knowledge across three discipline areas by adding two minors to your chosen creative industries major."

Do minors = something similar to elective modules (it sounds like electives, the way you put it)?

But you might be right, and that means that I've misinterpreted the info from the site. Nonetheless, I'll be going for an overseas edu fair next week to ask for more info and clear my doubts. Thanks again for your comments.

U may wanna find out compensation too, decent and good means diff numbers to ppl. Some thinks it's 10k others 2k

Okay sure.
