Let say I work in company A, then can I buy stocks from company A to collect dividend?

Will there be conflict of interest?

If company B is a competitor, can I buy their stocks as well?

Hmm, I haven't tried buying shares in which I am working in. But I know I bought shares of companies of my company's competitor and clients under my company..

1. Yes you can buy your own company's stock to collect dividend

2. In fact if you buy your interest is in line with the company, not conflicting.

3. Yes you can buy competitor's stock, but highly recommended you keep a low profile about it, best not to talk about it in the office.

If u sell or short sell ur own company stock, then consider conflict of interest :D

Also, big companies usually buy their competitors shares for their profits or dividends in case they outperform u. At least u get to earn what they profited. And then u report this as ur own investments profit.

1) Yes, but it's a bad idea. Here's why: think about the worst-case scenario, if the company goes down the tubes. You've suddenly lost your job... and you've lost all the money from your shares as well. You've just turned a single bad event - the loss of your job - into a doubly bad thing.

This is what happened to Lehman employees, most of whom had a hell of a lot of money tied up in shares of LEH. When Lehman blew up, these people lost their jobs (right in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression) and lost a huge chunk of their net worth as well.

2) No.

3) Sure.

There will not be a conflict of interest if you are just a normal employee.

Because you are not director level or Chief Executive officer(CEO) or even Cheif operating officer(COO). And you are not even any of the board of directors. THese people have insider news which when taking part in the ownership of shares is deemed to have conflict of interest.
