I recently come across this Acer model at Challenger. It's quite a steal. Price is around 1.3k and the processor is a i7-6700HQ. No SSD though. But I am having second thoughts because it's Acer and their reputation is not very good among consumers. So does anybody here have any quad core notebook recommendations? Budget less than 2k.

Thanks for the recommendations. The HP model looks really unique and nice. Sadly these models are all 15". I forgot to mention that I'm looking for a 14" model cos 15" models are not very portable (using a 15" now). But then again maybe I will get the HP model if the reviews are good. Anyway the Acer model I mentioned in the first post is the Aspire E5-491. I can't seem to find much information about it though.

I see...seem like the HP and Acer model have same weight at 2.3KG...
If you want light weight 14inch, there is Gigabyte P34W v5...at only 1.7KG...but our only distributer for this laptop here are selling them at high price though...:(

Noticed that Aftershock also got 14 inch quad core model, but it starts at SGD1956...

Anyway, that Acer model look interesting, which challenger did you see it?

Actually weight is okay with me. It's definitely going to be heavy. It's just that I must have a bag that is big enough to fit the 15" inch in. Ya, the Acer model sounds too good to be true. If I remember correctly, I saw it at Nex.

If that laptop is as great as others, other laptop makers can close shop already... :s22:

Go for Dell or HP...

First of all, you need a quad core CPU for what? Media design, video editing, gaming?

Yah, don't focus on what technology you want, focus on what you need first!

If can satisfy the need with cheaper but good option, the better; can channel the money to other needs.

Mostly programming. And the rest of it is just satisfaction from having a more powerful notebook.

Ya, I'm seriously considering the Aftershock S-14. It totally fits what I want just that the price is a lot more expensive than say, the HP Pavilion Gaming.

Hmm. Considering that programming have many types (e.g. web programming or game programming? Graphics modelling?), now can see why you want a more powerful laptop.

That said, why not consider the cheaper Aftershocks too? SM-15 sounds like a more cost-efficient choice for you.

i was thinking either MSI gaming notebooks or Asus G550 or X550.

Asus notebooks easier to upgrade the harddisk yourself. X550 sort of a budget gaming but have only 1 cooling fans compared to the other 2 laptops.

MSI cheapest gaming laptop is about 1.6k.

Aftershock (or to be exact, Clevo) laptops even easier to upgrade than either of these brands ;)

Thanks for the recommendation. I think now I'm really considering between SM-15 and S-14. Hard choice.

MSI prices for Sitex are out. Quite expensive for me. The cheapest model is 1.1k but the processor is from 2014. Similarly those Asus models seem to carry older processors.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. :)

Np, this one really boils down to your budget liao.

Main differences are as follows (SM-15 vs S-14):
Screen Size: 15.6" vs 14" (Not much difference, both IPS and 1080p. The S-14 is slightly smaller due to this though)
GPU: 960M vs 970M (Big difference in gaming performance due to architecture e.t.c. Better see benchmarks and decide from there)
RAM Type: DDR3L vs DDR4 (does not matter for now, but later on can impact due to availability e.t.c.)
Max RAM: 16GB vs 32GB (does not matter for now unless doing really intensive stuff)
ODD: Got vs don't have (does not matter much too, unless you use disc frequently or want to have the option to have another HDD; can replace the ODD with a HDD caddy)
Weight: 2.5kg vs 2kg (Slight difference too)
Battery Life: 280 minutes vs 180 minutes (Very significant, this is caused by the 960M's higher power efficiency and the SM-15's ability to hold bigger battery)

Price difference: $400
