Intending to travel to Scandinavia for 12days this coming Oct.

Lost between going on a F&E or with tour. Looking to go on the flam railway in norway or if lucky enough to view the northern lights as well.

Any recommendations for itinerary ?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Hi,

Great to see that you are keen to go to Scandi countries... In my travelling opportunities, i had some chance to visit Sweden and Denmark.. and little of Helsinki.. Not sure which part of Northern Europe are you interested to visit?

Have not visited Norway.. as this is the most expensive country between the 4 Northern Europe.. (i.e. like if u wanna go to the loo.. need at least SGD1-2 per visit in Sweden, not sure about Norway).. But heard that Norway has the most beautiful landscape..

In my opinion, is easy to move around in Northern Europe and no need to book tour package. No issue to Languages, as Most speaks fluent English and very helpful people too..
Also, if the visit is only 12 days, strong advice is to stick to 1-2 countries.. can take short flights or train (i.e. Between Sweden and Denmark.. there is a connecting train from Copenhagen to Malmo, Sweden, 1hour only)... but flight from Malmo to Stockholm is about 1 hour+..

Not sure if you can see the Aurora in Oct though.. cos normally is about nov.. but i may be wrong...

Nonetheless, Have fun in Northern Europe.. Is one of the most amazing place in Europe to visit..

Hi tingting,

Care to share how much are spent on daily expense like meals and transportation and the type of accommodation stayed during the trip?

Thanks

Go F&E if possible. Is it autumn in October? If so then you won't be able to catch auroras I think..I went to Nås in Dalarna and the place and view is beautiful if you trek up the hills. You can also look up Gotland, a beautiful island off Sweden with castle-like structures.

I rented a two storey cottage there for about $800/mth. I've never checked in at a hotel in Sweden but I'm guessing rooms go from $200-$500 a night.

I usually cook my own food since its cheaper that way.
If you're out and about and need food though, I usually buy those 'to eat within 42 hours' kinds. These are usually alot cheaper, like maybe $2-$4 for a huge seafood baguette. You can find these in ICA or Tempo, they have orange stickers on them.

It's also a good idea to book your train tickets early. The prices can double if you're booking on the spot there, or even 2-3 days before the trip. So yeah book early. If you're planning to bus around, then book a bus card. Will save you alot of money.

Sorry as I can only help you with regards to Sweden only. :p

Aurora periods are generally between sept to early April. But the problem with autumn is that the sky is usually overcast with plenty of rain, so even if there are lights weaving above your head, you most likely won't be able to see them. That said, even if you go in winter, if its cloudy and snows all the time, you won't be able to see it either.

Norway is indeed one of the more expensive Scandinavian countries. But they also have one of the most breathtaking sceneries. How about a cruise along the coast of Norway? I think Hurtiguren (can't remember the spelling) has a couple of interesting cruise itineraries. They are not cheap, but they go for a few days and at least accommodation is accounted for.

Personally I was toying with the idea of this year end flying to Bergen, then take a cruise to Tromso for the northern lights, and then fly to Stockholm, stay there for a few days and take another short cruise or ferry to Helsinki to visit a friend. But at the same time, I was also thinking if I should skip the auroras this time (December is generally not the best time to catch auroras as it snows pretty often, i.e. there are clouds) and spend the Christmas week at my friend's place in Finland, and then another week at London for the new year. Decisions, decisions.

Anyway I'm a little familiar when it comes to Finland, so if TS needs any help regarding Finland, please feel free to ask. :o

Bearine,

Frankly, the locations you are going is not really aurora friendly... Rovaniemi/Sinetta location has an outside chance to see aurora, provided that the Kp is high enough and the sky is clear (more of clear sky. When I was there, it was always cloudy). The rest have a lot of light pollution, so it's usually only visible if there is a very high Kp (e.g. 5 and above) - e.g. 23 Jan 2012, the Kp was 5.6 and the aurora can be seen even in Manchester (very low on horizon, but still visible)!

I know Rovaniemi has some aurora hunting activities, but it's a huge bus load kind (as far as I know, and cater to hotel patrons) and I am not certain if they managed to find any at all.

There is a chance to see aurora in Oct, in fact for people staying here in Singapore, Oct is the best weather to head there - it's still warm enough (you will find coldest temp will be like -10 deg celcius, and this is still bearable compare to -30 and below)! The landscape will be different as well, as you do not have the area fully covered with snow as yet compare to dec - mar.

I am heading there late Oct but to a higher location at 70deg north, middle of nowhere (ok, it's a small town), to have the chance of catching another glimpse of it (saw it for the 1st time in jan 2012). So I will be traveling around Norway in addition to the 3 nights aurora hunting there.

Oh.. I didnt know bout the KP index. *Time to research!*

Was hoping to catch it since there's only like 6 hours of daylight in dec. I also read bout the frequent snow during dec. Making it hard to see it.
Hmmm.. Dunno if shld travel to tromso to stay more days in the northern areas.

Dun think I will be back to scandi in the near future

I'm not too concern bout the -30 deg, though have not hit so low before, but -15deg in the past was alright for me.

Northern Lights maybe Tromso, Norway will be a good place to catch it!

I am heading up there this Winter. Hopefully it wont be cloudy with little snowfall for me to catch the lights!

Anybody here been to Tromso, Norway before?

I was there as well in May 2014 and i thought it was already spring and boy was i wrong! Pack a few thermals and you will be find. I bought the Oslo Pass and it was quite worth it as it covers the entire transportation network (bus, ferry, trams, train) and also free museum admissions.

I saw from the weather forecast that the temperature will be hovering at the lower 10s. So I will bring my jacket along.....

I suppose yours was a F&E tour? I am planning my itinerary, and would be nice if you could share with me your itinerary for reference.

Yup, mine was free and easy. After visiting the Nobel Peace Center, took about 3 minutes walk to the ferry terminal to Bygdøynesveien

These museums are located in Bygdøynesveien:
Norsk Folkemuseum
Viking Ship Museum
Norsk Maritimt Museum
The Kon-Tiki Museum

I enjoyed the museums as i love Vikings and exploration as especially the Norsk Maritimt Museum explain the earlier days of Arctic exploration. Norsk Folkemuseum is more to history of the Norwegian people from clothings to furnitures.

Frogner Park - A park that contains weird sculptures by Gustav Vingeland.

Holmenkollen Skijump Stadion - A ski jump hill with massive slope. Good view all around!

Akershus Festning - Fortress which look alot like castle. Just went around it and also managed to catch the hourly change of guards.

Norway Resistance Museum - Around Akershus Festning. Tells the story of Norway under Germany's thumb and its uprising.
