Just a hypothetical or maybe a real scenario however remote it maybe. If Spore govt ruling party changed hands ppl with above will be spared from any changes correct? I say correct but still due to Spore unique situation of one party for half century and more something niggling inside think what can really happen when they are gone?

Firstly newspapers will carry the news throughout the world for days, that the world's longest democratically elected government falls out of power.

Secondly there will be real uncertainty in the minds of many overseas investors and countries. But I believe majority will maintain a sit and wait approach first.

The 1st 1-3 months will be crucial for the new government.

In that currently unlikely event Singapore would continue to issue Singapore Government Securities and continue servicing the ones it has already issued.

Jamus Lim obviously knows what a bond is.

More like one day. Unfortunately readers and viewers don’t seem that interested in a foreign country’s election results.🤷

In this day and age, it seems surreal to think that if there is a change in government, Singapore will somehow collapse. Or that any change in government will be permanent and the ousted administration will not make a come back.

Have around 200k cash ready to be set aside for investment.

How should I go about investing? Which ETFs? Which companies shares have good value now?
Is topping up your FRS to full considered an investment? I will recommend doing so, if yours is not reached yet.
For ETFs, i buy the STI (G3B) via Vickers trading acct (u need to open a CDP acct) and VOO, VTV, VWRA via Syfe app.
Individual stocks - well the top 3 stocks that I have earned the most from are DBS, OCBC and Google. But that's over a period of time where I buy bit by bit and accumulate over time.

I think you meant CPF Special Account (or possibly Retirement Account). Sure, that’s an investment.

VOO and VTV are U.S. domiciled funds that are tax inappropriate for you, assuming you’re not a U.S. person. They’re subject to the higher 30% non-treaty dividend tax rate, unlike Irish domiciled equivalents. Also, they’re subject to U.S. estate tax.

You’re also picking too many funds IMHO since the stocks in VOO and VTV are already in VWRA, in very ample quantities.

In addition to the previous comments about single stocks, Alphabet stock (whether GOOG or GOOGL) is a U.S. estate taxable asset.

EDMW/Money Mind thread lifecycle in a nutshell:

  1. TS drops a bomb: "I have S$200k cash, where to invest?" — zero details on age, time horizon, debt, or financial goals.
  2. TS vanishes: Never replies to a single question. Probably out drinking bubble tea.
  3. The Forum War begins: Thread gets moved to Money Mind. Heavyweights enter to fight an ideological war over assumptions TS never made.
  4. Semantics showdown: Everyone spends pages arguing eg. whether topping up RA is an "investment" (yield view) or "longevity insurance" (capital lock-up view).
The reality: Recommending a $200k allocation without knowing Age, Time Horizon, and Objective is putting the cart before the horse. But hey, at least the thread keeps the rest of us entertained for # days straight!

And say instead of 200k TS say 2k. It will also invite a lot of arguments like some reader will advise go earn more before think of invest. Some will say 2k put in savings account not considered invest meh? So yeah I waiting for small magic number post to surface.

Above in bold means must take risk and no guarantee. But you put horizon 5 years so can gamble a bit. Try DBS OCBC odd lot and I doubt they go bankrupt in 5 years time.

If you are within 5 years to 55, topup to SA if not already max, guaranteed 4% pa plus capital guaranteed. When you reach 55, you plan to hit FRS and withdraw the rest. If you still have some runway to hit your 5 year target, then look to invest $500+4% compounded interest elsewhere! ;)
He ask for 5% you give 4% mean did not satisfy requirement unless he change requirement

DBS dropped 71% during the GFC I couldn’t remember.

But I know I use my CPF to buy OCBC and DBS during the 2008/2009 period with $83,392 and today it is worth $613,220! That is 7.35 times!

Fortunately I had made a choice not to sell the shares when I applied for housing loan some years later.

Another 14-years time it may or can hit a million as analysts says STI will be 10,000 by 2040.

maybe he misread at least 5% as at most 5%. even if cpf int is 40%, I won't invest my cash in cpf because i will lose the freedom to use the money.

Your horizon is 5 years = means you don't need the money for 5 years. I stated the condition - if you are within 5 years to 55. Your plan is to sell your investments to meet FRS at 55 and you knew what you can do then, if I remembered correctly.

You have to do your own due diligence to compare which is a better solution - risk vs reward. You can ask AI to help. But it is your choice.

What I will do with my $500?

1. Invest in Maribank Gold, or

2. Topup to MA. I will have a gap next mth. Jan, interest will go to OA, then continue to merry go round every year.
