Is there a criteria to be promoted to lcp and cpl? I know u will get promoted after a certain period of time. But is it only based on that? Can superior choose not to promote you also based on performance?

This is what I know few years back but not sure if it still applies now.

During your nsf period, the minimum you can go is lcp. This is the norm for all nsfs. Nearly all nsfs (those without any bad records) will get this lcp after 1 year of service. And they will ORD with minimium lcp.

As for cpl, you must pass your ippt during your second year of service in order to get this cpl. Your ippt must be done after you gotten your lcp status in order for you to ORD as cpl.

So basically promotion to lcp and cpl is not difficult. It is like the norm or basic standard set for all nsfs. The exception will be promotion to 3rd sgt. That one need to see a set of criterias such as performance, qualification, pes status, and selection test to determine whether you are fit and qualify to be one.

Last time as long as you got Poly Dip or GCE A, you will automatic be promoted to CPL.

Apart from IPPT, I don't see a clear criteria to determine for promotion such as work performance & conduct.

Therefore your superior can choose not to promote you.

Minimum number of months after enlistment, for:
LCP - 7
CPL - 12
CFC - 15

In some units, LCP to CPL is not a certainty even if one passes IPPT in the second year. A rare few still have the PFC rank.

PFC has already been phased out in 1990s... think was 1992 if i am not wrong.
Now only very old NSmen only u get to see them with PFC rank.

btw, CPL 12mths are for combat vocations. Support vocations are 15mths.

Yup, you are right, minimum 15mths to get to CPL in support vocs.

Know someone from 3SIR (mono) who got to PFC in late 2009, and ORD as one due to... issues. :s13:

PFC rank have not phased out yet. It is for those without formal or low qualification like PSLE.

The funny part in NS unit is a lot of people is wearing the same 1 stripe rank but they are holding old LCP & new PCF rank.

When there are no 3SG & CPL to be Sect IC, all suddenly become 'PFC' unless you take up name list!
