Has anyone used the youth pass which costs NT599 for unlimited travel over 5 days on taiwan's railways?

Is it true that u can't take the tze chiang trains with it? Or can I top up some money instead to take the tze chiang trains?

My trip will cover Taipei-hualian-jiufen-Taipei...so I think it will be worthwhile to get the pass, but since I can only apply for the youth pass when I reach taiwan, I can't reserve seats online now...which is worrying since the seats might be gone by the time I reach Taiwan.

What is the best way out of this?

But only chu kuang n tze qiang go direct to hualien from taipei. So if u cannot take tze chiang, means u have only chu kuang. The option becomes limited. Chu kuang train has seating allocated too. Meaning if u sit n someone comes up to u with a ticket, u have to relinquish your seat to him/her.

Local train or 區間, goes from taipei to yilan. Then u need to change from yilan to hualien. V mafan.

So only option: chu kuang lor

If u using it a lot. Then try lor. But as u travel to hualien, you will stay at least a 2-3days there. In between the card will be a little wasteful.

I got the Pass when I went to taiwan. If you do not frequently travel on the local trains, I suggest not taking it. Chu Kuang trains has not allocated seats for the pass. If there is no seats empty, either stand behind the last seat or stand outside at the train door with the wind blowing at you.

Or go around seat hopping. One solution. Check with conductor which seat is available troughout the journey, they will advise you accordingly. Do not be afraid, they are rather friendly people.

Thanks for the reply.
Can i know how crowded the "standing" spots are for chu kuang trains?
On my return trip, i will probably be taking a chu kuang train but it is a sunday so...probably even standing space will be scarce.

There will always be rooms to stand since chukuang can be a 12 wagon train. Just that u will feel bored and tired if the journey is too long. I did find place to squeeze from taitung to kaohsiung. Not very comfy.
