Hi, recently my laptop had these messages asking me to backup my hard drive as it was failing. Today it has totally died and will not even boot up. I am thinking of getting a 2.5" hard drive to replace it. The original drive in it is Western Digital scorpio blue 500GB 5400rpm sata drive.

Thinking of upgrading to bigger capacity like 1TB. There are 1TB 7200rpm and 5400rpm hard drives in the market. Will I be able to use a 7200rpm hard drive as a replacement ? Will the 7200rpm drive be significantly faster than 5400rpm drive ? I do not want to go for SSD coz of the small capacity.

Has anyone else upgraded their laptop hard drive from 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm drive ? Would like to hear some opinion on how much hotter it will run.

I doubt the heat will be more. But battery life will be affected

Will use the laptop mostly plugged in. Hope to get more opinions on those who have done this. Thanks.

The current dead drive in the laptop is a 2.5" Western Digital 9.5mm drive, if I changed to other brand (maybe HGST or Toshiba) it should still fit in right ? The current drive just slots right into laptop sata connector with no adapter or screws holding the hard disk. Would like to know if different brand drives have the sata connectors in the same spot as Western Digital drive. If it isn't then I can't swap brands.

sata port arrangement is the same throughout brands, so you need not worry. most of the 2.5" hardisk is 7 to 9.5mm so should be able to fit in nicely.

Can try HGST Travelstar 1TB 7200RPM.

I have bought the Hitachi travelstar 7200rpm drive. It has been a real bad choice for me considering that my laptop runs hot. Now the laptop gets so hot that it auto shutdown to protect itself. Will be getting 5400rpm drive to replace it.
