Hi,

I am planning to have my upcoming resale renovated 5 room HDB configured without any WIFI dead zone. Thus I prefer to have data points installed in each room. Even if there is a need for wifi in my room, I can buy wifi router, configure, and plug it to my room data point.

However as per my knowledge, for the data point installation, the only way we can do this in HDB is by converting the telephone point in the room to data point.
1. Is the conversion required hacking of the wall for rewiring?

2. If wall hacking and rewiring is not required, will the existing wire for telephone point affect the performance once change to data point?

3. Anyone can share "value for money" and trustable contractor for this job or maybe share the cost since I may have at least 5 points to be converted? [found some threads, you may ignore]

If those are questions that have been asked here many times, please redirect me to the thread. I don't mind reading it through as long I can get the answer.

Thank you in advance guys.

You must check whether your tel points are able to convert first, otherwise you have to lay new cables.
Just do a search for "telephone covert data point", there should be quite a number of installers for you to check pricing.

if you plan to stay for long, redo all the data point with Cat 6 cable. Plan properly before renovation. After you move in, running additional data point will not be a easy job.

This resale flat means that current owner did not do have any data points in the bedrooms.
There should be 1 data point in the living room, as mine is 5 years old BTO HDB flat but none in all the bedrooms.

First you may need to find out if the existing telephone points are Cat-6.
From what i know from ISP contractor BTO HDB flat from 2013 are already using Cat-6.
You may have to check on the flat remaining lease is at least 95 years, as compared in my case.

Face-plate is removable - google youtube to find out how.
Hence there is no need to do any hacking.

Also you may google on the number of wires & wiring coloring and compare to the actual wires of the cable.

For me i use Starhub contractor to do the conversion telephone to data points.
Cost $25 + gst per face-plate/data point.
Note that Starhub contractor do include transportation cost $53.50 inclusive gst per visit.

In my 5 room HDB flat the main router is in the living room.
I have an additional router in my master bedroom at the end of the hall of the flat.
So far wireless coverage is reasonable including kitchen.
Both routers are DLink DIR-868L.
Beside i include a switch in my master bedroom where the router is connect to.

Yes I'm planning to stay for long. Since the renovation will only start early next year, that is why I'm trying to collect information before finalizing what I need to do.. Thank you for the advise.

it is unlikely that your phone lines can be converted to rj45 unless the flat was only released in the last few years.

since its likely that laying new cables is necessary, it may be possible to only have 1 wifi access point in the centre of the house. this would help minimise the number of network equipment and cabling works. do test it out first. =)

If the flat is like 8-10 years old. Most likely the telephone cable aren’t Network cables.
