Hi All,

Just have a query regarding getting a refund of road tax:

I bought a second hand car recently. Before the purchase, when I queried the road tax expiry from onemotoring, the road tax had 9 more months to go, ie the previous owner paid the road tax for one year but sold the car to me after 3 months.

After the car was transferred to me, I checked the road tax expiry again and found that it will expire in 3 months, ie the expiry was shortened by 6 months.

So, how is that possible? Can the previous owner apply to get a refund of 6 months of road tax before transferring the car to me?

Doesn't seem fair though, if the road tax is pegged to the car, then LTA should transfer the remaining 9 months to me and not eat up 6 months. In effect, road tax will be paid twice then for the next 6 months.

Lesson to be learn is renew Road tax 6 monthly and not yearly.

Not difficult for their computer system to prorate and return the money

Yeah right. Everything blame government can leh.

Road tax will be refund if you scrape the car.
If transfer between owner, it cannot be refund one. The seller have to factor this into their selling price.

Did you screenshot the 9mths and 6 now? Else it’s your word vs LTA.

As many bros here mentioned, road tax purely follows the car. You might have keyed in a wrong plate to check or you remembered wrongly.

No way LTA will shrink the road tax just because you bought it over.

When I sold my car LTA sent me new discs for my old and new car.

Check with LTA.

Bear in mind road tax can only be renewed with insurance. Maybe system cock up detect shortened insurance so cut short it.

Got a reply from LTA, it appears that you can appeal to shorten the road tax paid from 12 months to 6 months upon paying an admin fee of $32.10, which is what the previous owner did.

So, now you know - it is possible to get a refund of 6 months if you have more than 6 months remaining on your road tax!

Nice info

Given so, the previous owner did so? That LTA replied you?
You bought from direct owner or from dealer?
Was the 1 year road tax part of the deal?

Yeah, LTA said the previous owner did apply to get a refund.

But road tax was not discussed in the negotiations as I expected it to be paid for only 6 months. So, I thought I had a bonus when I found out it was paid for 12 months ...

Is your seller a direct seller or dealer in sheep clothing ? He's really well informed about road tax refund , which most of us are unaware of..
