Routers... Asus AX55, TP-Link A72

Any idea which router is better?
Asus AX 55 , or TP-Link AX 72 ?
Which company has better servicing in case the router gives problem (even though that's unlikely).
I'm renewing my M1 home broadband, and am given the choice between the 2.

Asus still the best....

On paper the TP LINK has the better specs.
I only have experience with Asus service before, and they are pretty good in that aspect.

I will recommend the TP-Link AX72. Most reviews show that it’s actually just about 10% slower than the higher end AX73. Having used routers from both companies, I feel at the lower to mid range, TP-link should provide better performance relative to its asking price. Asus tend to be pricier for the specs due to the infamous Asus tax. At the high end, Asus products are better, but also cost a lot more too.

My personal opinion is hardware how good also no use, if software is not good. That is why SDN is the trend now (Eg. Unifi).

I chose the Asus AX55 when I signed up for M1, but sold it on carousel for less than a day of ownership coz I do not need it. If you ask me, not a brand supporter but I will go with Asus. But if there is a choice, i will still go with an Asus router that support merlin FW (AX55 is not)

I will recommend to get any of them and sell them in Carousell. Then get Asus RT-AX56U/58U/etc.

I do not like RT-AX55 since it has only 256MB RAM and it has no USB drive. RT-AX56U has 512MB and USB support, which is good for general use and also for future upgrade to Merlin FW.

But I'm not tech savvy (an understatement ). So I don't understand what you mean about the RAM and lack of USB drive.
If got higher RAM, so what? Faster?
Why need USB drive for the router ?

If you do not understand, it is okay, RT-AX55 is okay for many users and you can always keep it and using it as your main router.

Thanks. I placed my order yesterday evening..The Asus one.
I've been to their service department before , 2 years ago. IIRC, very inconvenient to get to (by public transport), but the guy was very nice, helpful and patient

Yes, that is a good usage for the RT-AX55.

Thks Xiaofan. I was talking to the ASUS technical support, he advised me to do it wirelessly

All my rooms have active lan point. Initially I thought I can just connect the MBR Room lan point to AX55 then it should work automatically as Aimesh but he said might have conflict of IP address hence he said just create Aimesh wirelessly

He said its easier to just power up ax55 in the room and then use the app to configure? No need to connect lan point to AX55 etc.

In your case, yes you need extra hardware to use Ethernet backhaul. You can try the suggestion to use wireless backhaul to see if that is good enough for you or not. And depending on the wall, you may have to shift the RT-AX55 to the Bedroom 2.

Ethernet backhaul will have better wireless performance.
1) If you have two LAN ports next to each other in the RT-AX88U location (recommended LAN port configuration for BTO renovation), then you can use the following method.

1a) ONT -- DB box port x -- Living room LAN port 1 -- RT-AX88U as main router -- Living room LAN port 2 -- DB box patch panel LAN Port y

1b) DB box patch panel LAN port y -- dumb switch like TP-Link SG-105 -- rest of the patch panel LAN ports

1c) MBR LAN port -- RT-AX55

2) If you only have one LAN port in the RT-AX88U location (many BTO seems to be like this as the other LAN port may be far away), then you have to put another router in the DB box, for example, an RT-AX56U which will act as the main router.

2a) ONT -- RT-AX56U -- DB box patch panel LAN Ports

2b) Living room LAN port -- RT-AX88U in AP mode (the CPU power will be kind of wasted)

Using RT-AX55 as node with ethernet backhaul (XT9 as main router), you may face issue with devices connected to it. They only connect at 285mbps. Need to switch to 5GHz wifi first, wait, then switch back to 1G Wan first for backhaul connection priority. Then devices connected to it will connect at 1.2Gbps until the system restarts where the issue happens again.

I think my current setting is already 1b. I have a TP Link SG105 already near the ONT DB box. That's how I manage to get all my Lan Points in the other 3 rooms to have data. I recalled whne I was renovating the house,you also gave me this idea. Hence I bought the SG105.
So does that mean I can use 1c ( connect Lan to AX55?)

If you already have 1a) and 1b), then yes you can go with 1c).
