I don't want this to be a pure mining rig where gpu is superior but cpu/mobo weak to save cost. Whenever I'm not mining, I still want this rig to be able to game.

$3k budget, here it goes:

i5 3570 + MSI Z77A-G45 Gaming = $425
G.Skill 1600mhz 8GB = $94
3x MSI R9 280x TF Gaming = $1437
WD 1TB Blue 64mb = $78
Corsair AX1200i PSU = $425
Corsair 600T White = $238

Total = $2697

So left around $303 change, you can see I haven't add SSD cuz this rig will be used mostly for mining so it's not necessary. Any improvements can be made to this setup?

*Edit* The reason I go for mid tower is because of space constraint. I know this rig will produce a lot of heat from the triple gpus but I can't get a full tower. Maybe will run this without side panel.

using consumer gpu to mine is not a good choice, due to high heat and high stress to gpu fan which will probably run at max speed.
you can probably take out 2 of the gpu you are buying and build a set of usb micro computing unit instead.

There's no alternative for scrypt mining for now. While currently can only mine using gpu, I want to mine as quickly as I can before alternatives like FPGA/ASIC comes out for scrypt mining.

By then I would either keep it for gaming or sell the remaining gpus to cut loss.

I think too late now...

I'm glad you are saying that. Means you don't know how else to mine consistently :)

Just so you know, my 7850 can mine about $30 daily after electricity cost :)

if u fixed up this rig how much would u earn per day after deducting electricity bill and take how long to break even?

It's very difficult to even give an estimate because the mining difficulty and the exchange rate is not constant.

If difficulty and exchange rate stays the same for now, I can break even in about 3-4 months after paying electricity bill.

Is it a good time now for bitcoin mining? Read that exchange rate plunged pretty drastic with China's ban on bitcoin transactions... :o

becarefulllllll....

We mine coins for the future, not to current prices. Current prices are irrelevant unless you cash out frequently.

Those rigs are for SHA-256 based coins only, not for scrypt based coins.
